Durkheim: Sociology should consider the social facts; it should investigate the impact of the large scale social structures such as education and family. We are all influenced by these structures.
But Sociology should be about how individuals interact with each other. We all have different roles and behave differently according to the context. We need to look at these mirco relationships.
But because we live in a large scale society with overacrching structures, we should take a macro perspective.
Take an example like education; what is the point in just looking at the big structures like social class; it is obvious that every individual will act differently depending on a range of factors.
Like what; Surely it is social class that determines peoples success in school so what is the point in looking at their behaviour: it all comes down to their social class anyway!
Well what about the interactions between teachers and students surely you cant ignore the role of labelling and the self-fulfilling prophecy!
