Pope Urban II launched the First Crusade in 1095 when he called for Christians to free Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the control of the Muslims.

Following these disasters the Holy Roman Emperor, set out for the East in 1189, but he died before he could reach the Holy Land, which was a severe loss near the very beginning of the Third Crusade
