The Coastal Prairie Grassland used to be found along the Texas Coastline, from Corpus Christi to Louisiana, and 70 miles inland. The Attwater's Prairie Chicken needs this grassland to survive.

In the 1930's, people began hunting the chickens and killing them by the 100's, which made their numbers go from 1 million to 8,700. In 1937, Tx passed a law to stop the hunting.

The chickens have dark zebra patterns and are 17-18 inches long. The males have long orange and red feathers that come out of the ears and an ear sac on the neck that can inflate during matting.
