| Hey man, I heard there is a thing call osmosis. What is it? | |
 | | |
 | | |
| Osmosis is the process of moving water or another solvent from an area of low concentration to high concentration and once in builds up the osmosis process stops. | |
 | | |
 | | |
| Well what happens if the cell fills up with too much water? | |
 | | |
 | | |
| Well if a cell is in a hypotonic solution the cell membrane will hold the water until its pressure against the cell water is equal, so really it cannot gain too much water during osmosis. | |
 | | |
The cell gains size because it is filling with water during the osmosis process.
 | | |
| So hypotonic... What would be the opposite? | |
 | | |
 | | |
| Well the opposite of hypotonic would be hypertonic which is when a solution has a higher osmotic pressure than another. When a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution it usually gains size. | |
