Brilliant. You have summed up my take on America quite succinctly. The people who "founded" (i.e: "stole") this country always enjoyed the ability to, no matter how badly they cocked things up where they were, to move on over the next hill and start over in yet another pristeen and bountiful part of this continent.

We're all moved in now. As you're heading over that hill, there's somebody heading over it from the other direction looking for the same clean slate that you are. And you're both driving past a 7-11 as you do it. We have met the enemy, and they is us. So what are we going to do about it? Probably nothing. I am all in favour of capitalism because it, mostly, works. It gives people something to do and something to strive for. However, the puppet show that our government has become is leaning far more towards facism than capitalism.

It's time to call ass on the puppet show and demand that stupid laws be disposed of. The machinery is in place to do this. It's called a ballot box and hardly anybody bothers to use it.

If the obviously rigged clusterfuck that was the last presidential election hasn't taken every hope from Americans that one American's vote might make a difference - and shot it in the ass - then maybe we can make our government work for us again.

I'm not holding my breath.

And they're driving a big fat pollutin' SUV that will force you off the road.

Nice trick if you can do it. The machine rigs it so the only candidates you've heard of are the ones who are already in, not that it matters anyway, since most of the sheep vote for the empty suits with the empty promises who are the same old scumbags.

Hope can come from strange places. In one of its less sane moments, the US Supreme Court ruled that relatives of people found with drugs could be kicked out of publicly funded housing. Now that Nellie Bushe has been found with crack again, perhaps daddy Jeb and uncie Duhb will be thrown out into the streets.

And justice for all!

Permit me to jump the tracks here for a moment. For some reason, this all reminds me of an episode in the fictional life of serial novel hero Slippery Jim di Griz, a.k.a. the Stainless Steel Rat, invention of Harry Harrison (who wrote Soylent Green). Slippery Jim was infiltrating a group of slimy, mollusk-like aliens who wanted to destroy humans, and their slogan was: "DEATH TO THE CRUNCHIES!" Because compared to them, we are crunchy.

I just keep thinking of that. "DEATH TO THE CRUNCHIES!"

That reminds me of a D&D campaign I ran a few years ago. One of the players had an orc mage - fed up with his own society, he had decided to seek out human company and advance his magical studies. Anyway, they ran into some of his old friends during the adventure, and on he spur of the moment I started calling the non-orcs in the party "pinkies", as in "why the hell are you hanging around with a bunch of soft little pinkies?" The players found it wuite insulting. I was happy with that.

(Uh, in case you didn't know, D&D orcs are generally green- or grey-skinned.)

Anyway. A year ago, bunnerabb and I had a pretty heated argument about whether or not it was brave to sacrifice yourself in order to commit an atrocity. I maintained that the cowardice of the 9/11 hijackers was down to their superstitious beliefs - if you think you're going on to a better world after death, killing yourself is self-interested and cowardly. bunner reckoned that killing yourself was always cowardly, because you wouldn't have to face the consequences of your action (interestingly, I see that show Politically Incorrect was later cancelled over something similar).

The whole argument was peripheral. It's clear that we're in agreement about what matters, and it seems most of the SC community is too.

Electoral participation in this country is now plumetting to US levels, much to the glee of Downing Street and their paymasters. People are generally pretty comfortable and voting, let alone protesting, is a hassle, so why bother? Sure, our government steals from us to pay for the massacre of the Iraqis, the Afghans, the Palestinians, the East Timorese, the Indonesians, the Iranians, the Saudi Arabians, the Colombians, which is a shame and everything, but we're doing okay and it's a chore to do anything about it. And even if we did, it probably wouldn't make any difference anyway. Nations have always been ruled by bullying murderers: it's just now they have the capacity to murder on a greater scale than ever before.

History has proven that at this stage of human evolution, people are too evil and selfish to make much of a success of utopian idealogies. Capitalism takes account of human nature, and so creates societies which are, for most, better to live in than any other. Unfortunately, we don't even have capitalism anymore. It's gone in favour of plain old kleptocracy, and those in charge are going to make sure it doesn't come back any time soon.

boorite tells me we need pessimism of the intellect and optimism of the will. I just signed a form distributed by CND agreeing to take an hour off work and participate in sit-ins if the "war" commences. A laughable little waste of time which won't make one iota of difference but, sad to say, I can't think of any better answer.

I salute you, regardless of the outcome of your protest. As you mentioned most of the politically minded here are just preaching to the choir (I'm talking about myself).

Someone mentioned having their car assaulted during The Gulf War for not honking the car horn to display patriotism.

Here, in this mostly leftist college community a guy I knew was assasinated for protesting that war. He owned and operated a small bookstore which sold "subversive" literature such as Psychotronic Magazine and books by Noam Chomsky.

He had been organizing protests around campus. He was on the local television news one week. The next week he was on again, speaking out against the war. Later that night someone went into his store, shot him in the head and left.

The police declared it a robbery although no cash was stolen from the register, the victims wallet was not taken, and no merchandise was taken.

The crime is unsolved, and the police stopped investigating it a long time ago. To my knowledge no one outside the local police were ever called in to investigate this "robbery homicide".

It's the only murder in town for the last twenty years or so that has been unsolved.

A very nice, intelligent and loving man - AND SOMEONE KILLED HIM BECAUSE HE WAS ANTI-WAR AND THE AUTHORITIES DIDN'T GIVE A SHIT.

This transhuman shit is getting on my nerves.

What stage of evolution? How is making us smarter going to cure society's problems?

Yeah, and by doing your protest despite the futility of it, you are putting that excellent maxim into action, unlike me. I just sit around watching TV and drinking beer.

How short-sighted. First, a more intelligent people is one that is more aware and asks more questions. Second, evolution isn't only about smarts. Simple behaviour modification at an embryonic level is already reality. And why do we need to be governed by careerists for all eternity? People tend to take decisions based on self-interest, so how about a totally mechanized executive with no interests?

Anyway, I'm an extropy geek and this is mostly science fiction for now. I'm not, of course, in any way linking this to the immediate problem. This is very long-term stuff. In the meantime, I'll continue to wear silly "Not in my name" t-shirts and pray nightly for Blair's painful demise.

Like all the Harvard and Yale grads on Wall Street and in the news media? Like Nietzsche? Like Kissinger? Oppenheimer? Von Braun?

So I've heard, but I haven't noticed it.

You're right that this is all in the far far future, so far in fact as to be of little interest or use to us who are alive today. Sort of like worrying about the fact that the Sun will die out in a few billion years. I also agree with your t-shirt and your prayers for the timely demise of certain world leaders. For all my preaching, I don't know what to do to stop this war. Throw myself in front of a tank?

I know! Let's set ourselves on fire. You first.

Oh for fuck's sake. Obviously, a more intelligent populace would be likelier to see through the bullshit peddled by those at the top. What, are you saying that the stupier people are, the better the world will be? Or are you just saying that it makes no difference?

So I've heard, but I haven't noticed it.

Yes. And at the moment, someone has to govern us. The difference is, once our computerized government is programmed, that's the end of it. No more risk of corruption. But with human governments, we run that risk with every decision they take.

No. Fifty years ago the cloning a living creature would have seemed so far off as to be of no concern. We're learning more about what makes us the way we are, and how to change what we are, all the time. The ability to do this kind of thing isn't outwith our grasp. The main question is not whether we'll be able to do it, but whether it'll be permitted to go ahead.

OKAY, FUCKER?

You mean like SKYNET?

Aye, but without the big Austrian Republicans.

You don't have to be prodigeously bright to get an Ivy League degree; just studious and dripping with old money.

I'm curious what your specific objection to Von Braun or Nietzsche might be (aside from the obvious fact that they were dirty filthy rotten krauts).

Has anyone smacked the US upside the head recently, or maybe dropped the administration on its head when it was a baby?

http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/09/17/1032054817869.html

Mr Rumsfield said in relation to the latest air strikes against "military" targets in the no-fly zone of Iraq:

"I directed it," Mr Rumsfeld said. "I don't like the idea of our planes being shot at. The idea that our planes go out and get shot at with impunity bothers me."

Lets not remind people that the no-fly zone isn't supported by the UN, and that a country has a right to defend their airspace.

Argh!
