Did you get a high engine temperature light, too? If so, then that sounds like a busted hose, which should set you back less than $100. I suppose it could also be a failed pump that led to a pressure build up and burst hose. That might explain the shuddering. If it's that, it will be considerably more expensive to fix.

Oh, I should probably mention that I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about. Putting gas in the correct hole is about as much as I can handle car-wise.

LJ, I hate to say this, but it sounds like the engine's fucked. The coolant smell was because the engine overheated, and the shuddering (I'm guessing knocking) was all about bearings or valves seizing as a result, and perhaps rods being thrown. Been through it myself. Left the thing on the Interstate in Dayton, Ohio and walked to a random Bob Evans, and who should be standing between me and the payphone but Pete Rose. I thought about asking if he was waiting for a call from his bookie, but thought the better of it. True story. Anyway, TG for lemon laws. You should get satisfaction.

I have had my oil plug fall out (yes, fall out) and the engine burn up, and I have had a timing belt break and the engine seize up. In both cases, there was one unmistakable symptom -- the car lost power. Putting my foot on the gas pedal only produced a whirring sound. (By the way, if your engine seizes, don't push on the gas pedal like I did -- your engine will just get more screwed than it already is.)

The story with the oil plug is actually pretty funny. I had been driving a Mazda 323 for a messenger company in San Francisco for a while and they gave me the option to buy it, so I did. On the very day I bought it, I was driving down 101 in South San Francisco when the symptoms described above occurred. (They guy who did the last oil change on this car swears the oil lug was on there tight.) After getting the car towed to San Bruno and learning that my engine was hosed, I was so depressed that I walked home from San Bruno to San Francisco (about 15 miles). On the way, I wandered through the Colma graveyards pondering death and fate, and I wondered if it would be possible to just lay down and will myself to die.

Wait a minute -- that story wasn't funny at all. Sorry.
