Welcome. You have found your new home with some of these bands.

Probably not, but metal is the one newer genre that I just realized I know nothing about. I'd like to learn. I'll probably end up liking some of it, because it sounds like a really diverse genre.

Well, first off, there is a lot to learn about metal. Hell, I've not even learned most of it. Maybe 20-30%. Secondly, it's barely even a single genre. There is so much variation between the different styles, it's like mini genres!

Yeah, metal isn't anything like rap (in the sense that rap can be all the same). I don't think there is any music that is just metal. Metal is more of a folder and all the types are papers in the folder.

Ah, that's my cue!

[hr]

I wanted to add that some King Crimson rocks harder than Metallica and that Metallica started losing it with Metallica aka "The Black Album;" I miss Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Rage; TOOL is okay, but Lateralus didn't do much for me; I've had trouble getting into the newer metal bands because it sounds like they're rehashing the stuff I was weaned on in the 80s; System Of A Down is pretty good; and since I'm here at work by myself this afternoon, I'm finally going to listen to the "Mostly Viking" disc that Drexle sent me as part of our CD swap.

Other arbitrary comments:

The first two Motley Crue records were more hard rock than metal, but Too Fast For Love perfectly captured the spirit of wild youth.

Don't forget PRONG and Faith No More.

Even though they used to sing about God, King's X rocked pretty hard at times.

If anyone can suggest newer Metal bands--not Nu-Metal, thank you--that play with variety and intelligence, I would appreciate hearing about them.

Well, in a sense, yes. There are still archetypal metal bands (Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Manowar), but they're few and far between these days. More often, metal is doused with a good amount of stuff that sounds nothing like it's predecessors. It's still technically the same, and held together by a thin string of what makes it metal, but there are few real rules for metal. I prefer to not include bands like Slipknot and System of a Down in 'metal', same with Tool, but I guess it's somewhat open to interperetation. Though, I think part of it is "don't show up to a Cannibal Corpse shot with a Slipknot shirt on. Blind Guardian or Wintersorg is fine, but lay off the mallcore". I just think that metal is varied enough by itself, without including mallcore bands in the mix. I leave it to others to decide these days, but I still would rather not be searching through the metal section and find some band that has turntables and a rapper vocalist amongst Amon Amarth, Testament, My Dying Bride, Exhumed, Diabolical Masquerade, and Exodus CDs. To be frank, metal is a musical style, a lifestyle, or a life, depending on how seriously you take it. I think I'm somwehere inbetween those ideals, living a life that gives me pride in my music, while still allowing myself to explore other venues of artistic input.

Ugh, please don't use that term. 'Nu-metal' is so misleading.

Anyway, there are many new metal bands like Nevermore that show variation in ideas. You'd have to research it a bit, but other then Nevermore, there are many bands that are simply amazing. The afformentioned Dimmu Borgir doesn't rehash much of anything, Iced Earth has some pretty new sounding stuff, as well as some overdone material, Blind Guardian is very progressive and has some new sounds to it, and there's always a new front opening up. I think some of the most progressive bands these days fit into black metal and gothic metal. They combine elements that just don't seem like they'd fit, but they work like a fine tuned machine. I think this whole discussion should really be moved into a CD swap for those truly interested in metal. Somewhat disassociated from the regular CD swap. Drexle and I, as well as any other fairly knowledgable metalheads on this board could compile a CD or two of metal bands that people should check out. We could start a discussion in IRC or something and assemble a tracklist for what we really want to do. I think I will go start a thread for this in CD Swap. Come check it out guys.

Metal, as I said before, is in different groups. System of a down and Slipknot along with Tool are in the Alternitive catagory, oftenly called Nu-Metal. But really, these bands are hard alternitive rock. Nu-Metal is an overused term. I remember when a band would have a good band life with no people going "I hate teh Nu-Metal. Like that band." Also, I have this local band, Baghead, they are kick-ass. But the problem is, one popular person doesn't like them and then we get people who have never heard them start hating them. I think if we all gave people in the world a chance this would be a better place.

And about Kids Bop:

Thank god bunner left, because all this classification and genre-fying would make him explode into a long rant.

Umfum and Nate rule, because they understand how hard Crimson can rock. HARD. Sometimes I can't even deal with how hard they rock, and I have to put on some later Leo Kottke to calm me down.

I could give a crap either way on the mallcore/alternative bands. I don't listen to them, so they don't bother me. What does bug me is when people refer to that stuff as metal. It just isn't metal. That doesn't make it bad, any more than Beethoven not being metal makes his music bad. In fact, I'm glad it's not metal. :D

Too much metal to explore as it is!

My problem is that I'm not so big into the doom and screamy side of Metal. Yet, Slayer has some stuff I like. I'm not totally against the screaming and such, but I'm pretty selective about it.

I have checked out a couple of Mushroomhead tracks, and they seem pretty cool.

Also, I realize there are different kinds and levels of METAL, but I'm not against including Alt. Metal bands like Tool, or Nu-Metal (if that's what SOAD is), and even Prog Metal (although I just can't get into Dream Theater) as long as the music is of good quality.

Okay, this thread should continue in CD Swap. Drexle and DragonXero can put together a disc or two for those interested in such things.

Alice In Chains? Fuck yeah, I miss them, too. I must have bought every fucking thing they've ever done. I've even got a crappy cover they did of Bowie's 'Suffragette City'.

Rage should never have broken up, godDAMMIT. Audioslave is a cheap subsitute for both Soundgarden and Rage. It's like the least attractive qualities of Rage and SOundgarden are far too obvious in Audioslave.

Soundgarden were one of the actual harder bands to come out of the Seattle thing, and they are sorely missed.

Tool opened my mind, introduced me to Bill Hicks, and through him to Noam Chomsky, so I made an effort to like Lateralus (yes, I feel an effort IS necessary), and now I love the album. Aenima is always going to be the best, though. Every fucking song on that album is gold.

I love Nine Inch Nails, but they have left much to be desired since after the collaboration with Bowie.

Nobody likes old Stone Temple Pilots?

[rant]I don't fucking classify music in genres other than the pretty standard ones like country, punk, metal, r&b, etc. I wouldn't even use those if I didn't have to, but it makes it easier to explain things to morons. And I swear, all you people who will bait me afterwards aside, I FUCKING HATE THE LABEL 'grunge'!!! Never have I been so disgusted with the need to classify things. Grunge-metal? What the fuck does that mean? Hell, the word 'Alternative' made me want to punch walls when I first heard the stuff I listened to classified as that. Like Alice In Chains wasn't metal enough to be called metal? It wasn't Death Metal, it wasn't Black Metal, it wasn't Speed Metal, BUT ITS STILL FUCKING METAL!!! [/rant]

I dabbled in serious metal for a while, and got really into Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Brutality, and fell in love with Testament. But now I like a smoother ride through my rock'n'roll, and I go for bands most like TOol, Chevelle, and the Deftones.

Perhaps you should be talking to the marketing execs about Alice in Chains and Soundgarden being called "Alternative rock" back in the day. I believe they're the ones who decided not to try to sell anything with the word "metal" in it back in the 90s.

Because, rightly so, metal was made dead dead dead by Nirvana and company. I wouldn't call either Soundgarden or AIC metal, only in a remote respect.
