If people have made the decision to never see Rent simply because they've heard part of the soundtrack, then they are missing out.

I wasn't impressed with the soundtrack.

I was blown away by a show that I thought I knew.

You can't judge Rent and say that it sucks when you've never seen it.

Having seen both Rent and La Boheme in the same year, I believe Rent to be the better show.

La Boheme is a good story arc. The music is great. The individual characters are sorely lacking.

People meet. They don't really talk. Suddenly they are madly in love, though they don't know each other. They spend time together and realize they can't stand each other. One of them dies, and suddenly the love returns.

I was shocked by how funny certain scenes were in La Boheme given the down nature of the Opera. All in all it was pretty good, but I found it hard to be moved by two-dimensional soap-opera characters.

That was kind of my impression of Rent when I saw it, although I've never seen La Boheme so maybe it's even more so with that show.

Actually I just watched the musical adaptation of The Color Purple before it shuffled off to New York and I thought the same thing. Transitions and strong characters don't seem to be a crucial component for what people consider 'good' musicals.

True fact: When Freddy Mercury found out he had AIDS, he sat down and wrote a song called La Bohemean Rhapsody. Later on, he shortened the title and changed a few lines (it became "Mama, just KILLED a man"), but still, we should remember that without Rent (which I saw and was nonplussed by), we'd never have had the Wayne's World movie.

HTH.

I can't, can I. It's a good thing I've seen quite a few scenes of it. With the ORIGINAL cast. Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi, and where Taye Diggs made his bones.

Dude, I fucking hate Rent. And you mean to tell me if I hear the entire soundtrack, hate the songs, hate the verbal acting in the "numbers", etc., that I would enjoy the play? That I wouldn't still think it sucks?

"Wow, the music sucked so much ass my testicles turned necrotic, but the ACTING amidst all that crappy shit was awesome!"

Freddy Mercury was awesome. Rent is not.

I think it was Eve.

Unless it was Snow White.

Freddy Mercury & co. pulled off a trick that no previous rock band could, to my knowledge. They sold a flamingly queer act to the Trans Am and mullet crowd. I mean, they even named it "Queen." I remember my next-door neighbors in the 70s, real rocker dudes, rocking out to Queen and occasionally wondering if the name had anything to do with homosexuality, which they despised. Hahahahahaha.

I've always been amused by that as well, Boo, and also how Elton John manages to sneak under the redneck radar. I guess as long as they don't write a song called "having sex with another guy is fun" then the rednecks can maintain a curiousity and listen in good faith.
