If people have made the decision to never see Rent simply because they've heard part of the soundtrack, then they are missing out.
I wasn't impressed with the soundtrack.
I was blown away by a show that I thought I knew.
You can't judge Rent and say that it sucks when you've never seen it.
Having seen both Rent and La Boheme in the same year, I believe Rent to be the better show.
La Boheme is a good story arc. The music is great. The individual characters are sorely lacking.
People meet. They don't really talk. Suddenly they are madly in love, though they don't know each other. They spend time together and realize they can't stand each other. One of them dies, and suddenly the love returns.
I was shocked by how funny certain scenes were in La Boheme given the down nature of the Opera. All in all it was pretty good, but I found it hard to be moved by two-dimensional soap-opera characters.
