In fairness, I should mention that an invasion of Iraq doesn't have absolutely nothing going for it. After all, if it all goes to plan and a Halliburton-friendly dictatorship is installed, at least the sanctions will end.

the pedophile tack is more than a little bit detached from reality, but having reread my last ramble from last night, i now realize it was just my long way of reiterating the "i hereby withdraw from this here discussion" thing. i neither know nor care enough about the situation to make any further statements, you see.

Most Americans agree with Il Shmucko in neither knowing nor caring enough about bombing Iraq to form a real opinion on the matter. But Washington is our government, supposedly acting in "our interests," and we live in a free country, and so we have a duty to find out all we can about what Washington is doing and to make it behave like a civilized government. Otherwise the blood is on our hands.

I agree with what DexX and Andy have said. Here has been the result of US "precision" air strikes in Iraq: Bomb now and die later. Our "military" targets have included everything from power plants to bridges and roads and even sewage and water treatment plants. What happens when you destroy all the clean water in a major city? People get cholera and die horribly, especially those least able to defend themselves, i.e., children, the sick, and the elderly. How this is different from dropping actual cholera on the population is beyond me. And yet we are ready to do it all again because Saddam might have biological weapons!

What do we call spraying Agent Orange all over Vietnam? Was that a biological weapon? If so, should Washington be bombed? How about when Bush v. 1.0 heard about his buddy Saddam's gassing of the Kurds and responded by petitioning Congress for more weapons and training for Saddam's army? Was that sponsoring terrorism?

This is such a monumental exercise in hypocrisy that words fail me.

Well, sorta. The ICJ has actually condemned a lot of countries for a lot of things you could call terrorism. The US however holds the distinction of being the only country that was condemned and then vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling on "all states"-- no names were named-- calling on all states to simply "observe international law." They voted against this resolution in the General Assembly also.

Now Washington is witholding support from the world court until the US military is granted immunity from prosecution-- for anything, ever.

And we are supposed to be the guardians of international law. What a joke.

This story was on the front page of this Sunday's Washington Post. I was stunned. I mean my jaw just hit the floor. Seldom do our major news sources give such emphasis to the significant facts, no matter how obvious they may be. For example, the previous Sunday's front page constructed the US's near-total diplomatic isolation as follows: "Bush, Blair Decry Hussein. Iraqi Threat Is Real, They Say." Wow, that's some reporting.

But this week they're saying it's all about the oil. Just when you think you've got the Post's number, they go and tell the truth. How weird.
