1): Don't make a few comics and then log on here and say "I'm new! Look at my comics and tell me what you think!" Everybody hates that shit.

2): Threatening to bitchslap the other forum users if they don't go and look at your lame-assed comics will make you an instant pariah, or worse, cause a large red robot with a boner the size of Wyoming to knock on your door. "Avon calling". *RAARRR!*

3): Just make comics. If people like them, they'll tell you.

For people who allow themselves to be irritated, yes. I just laugh at those posts without saying I'm doing it, like the bastard I am.

I've seen a lot of places on line where the newbies who draw attention to themselves get hazed. This is why I lurk for a few days, and then just wade into the conversations without drawing attention to myself. Works every time.

Besides, this place is full of smartasses... it doesn't take much exploration of the threads to figure that out. When dealing with smartasses, the last thing you want to do is put on a display like Gnu Guy... or crabby when he first showed up.

That's really the heart of it. Have some respect for the group of people you're joining by observing them and learning a bit about them. Figure out the rules of the game that's being played before you go trying to get people to play by your rules.

That applies to any social group. The people who come in wearing an "I lack social skills" badge make everyone a little uncomfortable. That's why everyone tries to distance themselves as much as possible.

Why can't you just skip doing something that you've been told in plain English just gets on everybody's tits? I mean... doesn't that make more sense?

Often "look at my strips and tell me if you like them" is code for "look at my strips and tell me I'm a god damn riot". Usually, you're not. Even those of us who have had plenty of practice and read plenty of other people's strips still have to work to be funny, and quite frequently we fail at it. The chances that you are the most hilarious thing we've seen this year are low. If you are, take it on the road. Comedy clubs will actually pay you.

What really bugs me, to be honest, is the presumption that some guy who just walked in off the street and has only made 6 comics is somehow deserving of a peer review from people who each have several dozen strips under their belts and have never said so much as "do you all think I suck ass?" Because they understand something very important, not just here but in all aspects of life: it's not about you. It's about what you do. Write funny comics, and the praise will surely follow. Enter some of the contests we run; part of the reason we have them is to give recognition to people who have exercised the art of humor on this site.

"We probably wouldn't worry about what people think of us if we could know how seldom they do." -- Olin Miller

I don't know who Olin Miller is, but I think I've found a quote for my profile.

I don't care two Willie Nelsons what any of you think about my comics. You can't live with a smelly, farty bastard for 18 years, bathe him for 17, help him cry himself to sleep for the last five (ever since he saw Mr. Holland's Opus), and still care what people think of you, your boy, or your desire to kill your boy.

God, I hate him.

Jeez, folks. Gabe is 133+, and I show my appreciation by posting a pic of him felching a gorilla. I mean he really has his face buried in that animal's butt cheeks. And I used his wedding picture. So maybe this should tell you not to take the ire of a bunch of prefab comic-strip constructors too too seriously.

Amen, brother man. I said AMEN. I also said brother and man.

Seems like some people have their buttcheeks clenched around here. Maybe it's due to the Deisel and Crabby Era of Pain, or maybe there's a disturbance in the force, I don't know. They should watch Airplane a couple of times, use words like "Porcupine" and "Nyuck" and mellow.

Whoa, hold on there fella. You're even worse than a newbie. You're a RE-newbie. You can't just leave and waltz back in whenever you want. Look what happened to Obi when he came back. We called an emergency session of the Stripper's Guild and put him on a mandatory three-week suspension, during which time he wasn't allowed to use any of the new characters or backgrounds. Plus he had to buy us all ice cream. I'm afraid you're in the same boat.
