Yes people, it's actually happened. What used to be an illustrious group of talented artists has devolved into a few scattered hacks barely managing to choke up the "Shoobie doos" and the "Bee bop a doo bops" required to make a #145 single by today's watered-down standards.

Kids, pack away your Bobby Lewis albums and sell your vintage "Tooty Fruity" single from the 50s on ebay before the selling price drops to dirt cheap. The party's over.

For one thing, that's not bebop. That's doo wop.
Be-bop is a style of free-form jazz.

For another, it be-bop-a-Lula.

And thirdly....

Yeah, doo-wop aint much tearing up the charts, now, but those guys standing around on the corner singing back in the day nailed more ass with a decent falsetto that any of you fruit farming, pocket protector-wearing, simpering momos have even SEEN on the internet. Let alone had. And you never WILL if you keep making lame jokes involving mutant cartoon rhinoceri.

Yeah, being a crotchety old geezer is where it's really at when it comes to layin' the chicks.

But I got to see a doo-wop band play here a couple months ago, and it was kinda fun. I don't think I heard an original song out of them, though. Their set seemed to be little more than the classic old standards of doo-wop.

Hardly.

Be-bop was just an offhand, onomatopoeic way of describing the sort of rhythmic jazz that coined the phrase, and doo-wop was just what kids called a` capella singing because the guys would use nonsense syllables to approximate the sounds of the instruments or [traditionally] orchestral passages that they were comping. The only "doo wop" song that actually has the lyric "doo-wop-doo-wah" in it, IIRC, is "In the Still Of The Night" by the Five Satins.

Naturally, critics got ahold of those ideas and used them as labels and tried to create 'genres' around them. Critics and white people have fucked up more good music than any Creed recording session in history.

Now the tail wags the dog.

A genre for every band, and for every band, a genre.

We're all forgetting the focus of this! Rocksteady is alive and kicking, he is still the king mutant rhino! All hail Rocksteady, greatest shitty villian ever!

Oh yeah, I saw the new TMNT cartoons. What the FUCK happened? Where are Rocksteady and Bebop? What the fuck is up with Shredder? Where are the goddamn neutrinos? Why is it that in over 10 years, the animation hasn't gotten a damn bit better?

This new show blows. And the turtles weren't originally different shades of green in the cartoon. They just did that in the toys and video games to FUCK with the little kids.

Also, Donatello isn't a nerd anymore. Leonardo isn't as much of an anal prick. Michaelangelo sounds more like a valley girl than a surfer. Raphael isn't a fucking dickhead badass anymore. Splinter is not a sage wise man anymore. April is a right cunt!

FUCK THIS.

Suck it up, kiddies.

What better way to churn out cheap crap for the masses than by dumbing down each generation just a bit more than the last and shoveling shit into it's maw, and calling it candy?

"Hey, you know.. that's not a very good song / production / cartoon / mix / show / whatever..."

Actually, Kevin Eastman (who you may know as the Editor-in-chief of Heavy Metal magazine, and who is married to Julie Strain), and Peter Laird, the original creators of TMNT, started them in black & white. When they went color (in their comics, that they wrote), the turtles WERE actually different colors. At one point, Raphael became entirely purple-black.

Yes, and the original b/w comic was a parody of the Frank Miller graphic novel Ronin and, to a lesser extent, Miller's work on Daredevil, of which few (if any) present-day TMNT fans are aware. I've always found it odd that a way-underground sendup wound up making bazillions of dollars, while the original never made it outside of comic book circles.

Ronin is still in print, and it's great. No relationship to the movie starring Robert Deniro.

Sin City looks to be really cool. Rodriquez did a great job of keeping a very graphic novel look to the movie.

I'll need to pick up the book one of these days before the movie comes out.

I don't care, the original cartoon didn't have them different colors. The toys were based off the cartoon, dammit.

The original comic *was* far more mature and well-drawn, but that's what you get with comics as opposed to cartoons.

Say, I haven't seen Cowboy Bebop on Cartoon Network in a while.

As for music, Bebop is not "free-form" Jazz. Even though Bebop was a reaction against the highly-structured "Big Band" and "Swing" styles of Jazz, Bebop (or Bop) usually follows the pattern of: stating an introductory melody and establishing rhythmic feel, soloing in turn by the lead (and occasionally rhythm) instruments (usually horns), and restating the melody before conclusion of the piece.

Scat singers use vocal sounds (such as "scibbety-bop, de-bop, de-doo-wah") to imitate, rival, and even accompany instrumental solos. Plus, the singers get to show off their chops.

Acapella singers use "doo-wop" and similar sounds in place of an instrumental rhythm section.

Also, some Bebop grew into Hard Bop which in turn helped serve as a basis for some of the "Modern" Jazz sound of the 60s (as opposed to the "Cool" sound that birthed the "Modal" movement also of the 60s). The Modern style still influences many of today's Jazz artists and groups. So, Bebop lives.
