Thankyou. The top ones are all ones I've made entirely with photoshop, the castle I used a photo of a castle and modified it as a practice, and the others were just photos I had lying around that I modified slightly. They weren't really supposed to be in sets, but if I make more they'll fit in with the top ones.

All good, but I really like the Castle and the pub ones, especially the one with Brad as bartender. I hope that one gets added, I've already got a series brewing in my head where Brad sells booze to the Asian Girls and gets arrested.

Does the perspective look odd to anyone else in the top set? I'm just wondering what they would look like with our current set of characters in front of the backgrounds.

That said, I would definintely use them if they were added!

The kitchen perspective is a little wierd for our characters, I think. The rest will probably be okay.

I don't like the picture of Brad, or the name "Mick's Pub." I think those incidentals both limit what you can do with the background. (What if you're supposed to be at Cheers, for example? Or Applebees?)

Other than those points, I think the backgrounds are great.

I sent Brad three backgrounds for possible use here at Stripcreator: a kitchen and two interior library scenes.

My comments are based on two things: art quality and need.

  • Kitchen: We definitely need a kitchen. I'd love to see one with a refrigerator, with an image also available with the fridge door open. Similarly, a version of this one with something cooking could be nice.

  • Living Room and Loungeroom: Not really needed -- doorshutint and bedroom and background2/3 already serve this purpose well. However, the painting in the living room makes this essential! Regardless of whether or not it's Brad's house.

  • Pub: Not essential, but nice. One change I'd consider making: Have the bar extend straight across (as in the kaddar2 "news" images) so that the two characters can be right at the bar.

  • Castle: I guess it would be good for medieval period comics, instead of relying on generic exterior backgrounds.

  • Paddock: I personally don't see much use for it.

  • Carpark: Not good as is. I'd much rather see it from a perspective of within the lot, rather than overlooking it from afar (is that from the roof of a building?)

I like this suggestion. It would be even better if we could get a bartender character similar to the kaddar news images that fit seemlessly into the background.

I also disagree about it not being essential. Boorite's been drinking the same beer for four years. I'm sure he needs a new one by now.

Okay, I've updated my link to include one more image of a kitchen that shows a refrigerator. If I have time later this week I'll see if I can make one with the fridge door open, but I can't make any promises on it.

Meanwhile I've sent the new image to Brad.

Thankyou everyone for the feedback, I've responded to some of the posts below.

That being said some of the requested changes might take a little time, I don't have the internet on at home and I'm endeavouring to get this done between taking phone calls at work...

In response to Kaufman:

quote:

I'll see what I can whip up. It'll be a little lower on my list of priorities though.

I agree in many respects, but I've always wanted a little more variety- especially in a strip series where more than one house may be needed. I felt it was the sort of thing that is generic enough that it'll get plenty of use.

quote:
Pub: Not essential, but nice. One change I'd consider making: Have the bar extend straight across (as in the kaddar2 "news" images) so that the two characters can be right at the bar.

I will have a go at making a different version of this later.

quote:
Castle: I guess it would be good for medieval period comics, instead of relying on generic exterior backgrounds.

This one was really just a practice at using paint...

quote:
Paddock: I personally don't see much use for it.

Likewise. I had it there so I thought I'd put it up. It was just a photo I took from the window at work.

quote:
Carpark: Not good as is. I'd much rather see it from a perspective of within the lot, rather than overlooking it from afar (is that from the roof of a building?)

As with the Paddock I don't like it much. It was actually out of a window, I added the wall and railing so it would give the character somewhere to stand (It looked odd coming from an elevated view).

Biped:

quote:

That I can do, I used the available picture and in retrospect I should have made it smaller to begin with.

I'll have a play around with the kitchen and maybe crop it and swing it around to a more front on view, and use the other half with a fridge.

Seemless might be tricky, I'm really not that skilled as yet. On that note if anyone else wants to play around with any of my images to improve them I don't mind at all.

All right, I should warn in advance that I'm real picky about the graphics I add because a) each one I add uses more bandwidth and b) once they go up it's really annoying to take them down.

Some of these points have been covered by other people, some haven't:

- The drawings seem a little too MS Paint-style for my taste. I'm no artist, so I'm not sure if that's just the ultra loud colors or something. Maybe I've been spoiled by Rabid's backgrounds.

- There's a ton of JPG artifacting in a lot of them (check out the counter top on the kitchen background.)

- The kitchen background doesn't work with standing characters on the right side.

- Putting characters in the backgrounds (like the bartender) is a neat idea but would probably be confusing to users as they won't be able to give them dialog. And I'm not sure how much a mute character really adds to the setting.

- The paddock seems like it's covered by one of the many field backgrounds already on the site.

- Where are the photo backgrounds from, are they royalty free, etc.

It could be the colours, or it could be that I'm using MS Paint...

Sadly I don't have the internet at home and I can't put photoshop on the computer I use at work. If that's a problem I can hold off until I get my computer upgraded and DSL hooked up (which should be mid to late june). After that I will be able to produce a much higher standard of work.

Also this monitor is very dark, so I'll have to check them out on one of the newer ones to work on the aesthetics.

quote:
- There's a ton of JPG artifacting in a lot of them (check out the counter top on the kitchen background.)

Again, this is the result of Paint. I might be able to get around that by sending them in BMP format to someone and getting them to convert them using Photoshopm, or something along those lines.

quote:
- The kitchen background doesn't work with standing characters on the right side.

I will re-do this one altogher if it'll be used, that's not a problem. I didn't think of perspective when I started making them. I also am not an artist...

quote:

Yeah, that's why I put in 2 versions. In retrospect what seemed like a fun novelty wasn't the best move.

quote:
- The paddock seems like it's covered by one of the many field backgrounds already on the site.

Yeah, I think it sucks too. I took the photo a while back for something else, I thought I'd throw it in.

quote:
- Where are the photo backgrounds from, are they royalty free, etc.

Everything is royalty free and my own work, with the exception of things I've borrowed from existing art on stripcreator. The paddock and carpark are photos I took. The castle was originally a photograph that I did over with Paint (Very poorly...). The grass was taken from another photo, and chopped up so much it is unrecognizable (I just took segments and muddled them up and then used the spraypaint feature to blend them a little).

How many backgrounds do you actually want/need? Also is there anything in particular that you want?

To be honest I'd like to do a lot, but I knew hosting restrictions would take precedence. If you give me an idea of how many you're prepared to use I'll see what people want made and work with that.

I'm also not at all concerned if you don't want to use anything I make, I'm also concerned with maintaining the quality of stripcreator, and since I've just started doing this I'm not expecting to turn out masterpieces.

The thing with my backgrounds is they're done in vectors. That's why they have the crisp lines and sharp colours. This effect is pretty impossible to get in MS Paint.

I'm also glad you think I spoil you, Brad.

I also apologise for not making any yet, I'm just really lazy and I often have a hard time just getting started especially since a lot of the backgrounds suggestion are somewhat complex.

Kaddar, thanks for mentioning "antialiasing". I did not know what that meant, so I did a Google search.

The jagged lines of the angles do frustrate me, but I could not figure out how to smooth them out. And due to time constraints, I never took the time to seek out how to remedy that problem. Since this is just a hobby for me, I have not given it top priority. But now I am curious about it.

I do not know if MS Paint has a feature that fixes the jagged lines, or if one has to acquire separate software to do that.
