I'm sure it's been asked many times before, but...

How does the voting thing work? I get that only donors can vote, which is fine, but loads of the strips in the top rated list are crap.

Is it because nobody ever votes?

Sorry, but I just waded through another mush of unintelligible strips that brought me down a bit. You know, the ones with no punchline that end with some random monster saying something like "this sucks".

Thinking about that, should there be a bottom rated list? I'd gladly vote for a few to go in there.

I think it's a matter of taste. We've got a wide variety of people here, and we don't always agree on what's funny. What's funny to me isn't always funny to you, or vice-versa.

90% of the comics you read here (hell, 90% of the comics you read in the paper or on the web) are crap. The same is true for sitcom writers, comedians, and the thousands of Dave Barry wannabees in the world.

The thing you have to watch for is people who have better percentages (in your opinion). But you're going to have to wade through the crap to get to it.

Any donor who wants to can rate any comic "good" (10), "okay" (5), or "bad" (0), and can change their vote at any time. The rating you see for a comic is an average of all its votes. The top-rated list contains every comic that has four or more votes and an average or higher-than-average rating. It's understandable if you don't find all of them funny. If it's worth your time to complain about it -- which you've done more than once now -- then perhaps it's worth a few of your dollars to do something about it.

You can see how many people have voted for a strip on the top-rated list by looking in the "Votes" column. In addition to the ones you see, there are many more strips with fewer than four votes and/or a rating less than 5. On an individual user's info page, the threshold for displaying ratings for strips is three votes, regardless of rating (I think).

I think I would be strongly opposed to any feature that rewards bad comic writing with attention.

Any strip with more than three votes and a rating over five gets into toprated.php. So they don't have to be that great just to make the list. What puzzles me is how, with only three degrees of quality available, no strip has a 10 rating. Do some people really think "You've got cancer!" is only okay? Do they have strips they consider better?

What puzzles me is why he doesn't just go out and buy a TB303. Or even an MC505 which I've had a go on and is better and also cheaper on Ebay for some reason.

The voting system invited an element of politics into SC, like the star rating thing. You're almost gauranteed that as soon as there's a new top comic it'll be okayed down to size by someone or other.

Doesn't have the same cult/historical value. Also, he may not have £500 lying around.

There have been 15,230 comic votes in total.

I think the top rated comic list is actually quite good. I don't love everything on there, but the odds of finding something good are decent.

One of the problems/necessary evils with the voting system is that comics need 4 or more votes to get on there. With approaching 300,000 comics on the site, it takes a while for comics to generate enough votes.

I've been trying to think of a way to improve that, but I haven't come up with much yet.

Maybe I should just buy a TB303 and be done with it.

Wouldn't really want an SH101 or any of those others. Not quite the same. You'll know when I've bought one - you'll see someone called I've_got_a_303 posting hilarious comics here. ;-)

I have a question regarding voting...(which will most likely have this happen to me) If someone is having a bad day can they just vote everyone down and stuff? If there a certain amount of votes someone can do in a day?

I would also like a random assortment of letters and numbers that have no meaning to anyone.
