I know almost every song that was top40/rock from 1980 - 1995. This is my area of expertise when it comes to music. After 1995 I kind of checked out and while I listen to music of today, I seldom give a shit enough (other than rarities like James Blunt or Tenacious D) to actually go find it.

So I am turning to my good friend "Internet" and y'all as there may be some among you with some background in this kind of music. I am actually not sure what you might call it.

I managed to find several definitions of renassaince or baroque music, but in those categories are very disparate music styles and choices, even from the same composer.

The other day I heard a song identified only as "Allegro" which means fast. It was really delightful. It had a lot of brassy trumpets and trills.

The kind of music you would expect a pompous Captain of a British Frigate to be playing, or some kind of "Frasier Crane" wannabe driving his Mercedes in the Hamptons would listen too.

If you are familliar with Colonization by Sid Mier, the music had the quality of that.

Crash of cymbals and majestic sweeping sounds.

I did some searching and found (and purchased) an album by Handel called "Water Songs" that was very similar in quality.

I do not want any operatic jibber jabb singing in there though. His other stuff had a lot of religious "Hallelujah" type stuff in it that I did not dig.

I'd almost call the music I am interested in, "Pirate" music, because it has that sort of sound to it that makes you picture the clash of great armies or ships with the backdrop of minuets and powdered wig ambassadors.

I am definitely not interested in the romantic/ballad stuff either.

I also ordered themes to movies like Gladiator and Bravehart. I wanted that sort of epic sweeping symphonic sound. I realized though that those were not like the music from Colonization that I was after. still pretty good.

Any ideas?

Anyone know the music that inspired Colonization? There is a music player that they released here;

http://www.colonization.biz/download/colojb.zip

I can't get it to work on windows XP. Its supposed to be a jukebox with the songs that inspired the themes.

also found
http://www.freecol.org

They made a free version of Colonization to work on windows XP and updated the graphics. Finished in 2005. So that is pretty cool.

If you have other songs for me to check out in that style, much appreciated.

Handel's Water Music always struck me as sonic wallpaper.

If you want brash, programmatic music, then you actually *are* interested in Romantic music. Besides Beethoven's whole oeuvre, here are some famous examples, some of which you probably know from Fantasia, TV commercials, and so on:

Berlioz, Symphonie Fantastique. Movement 5, "Dream of a Witch's Sabbath," is high thrills-per-minute.

Tchaikovsky, Symphony no. 4 in F Minor.

Mendelssohn, Symphony no. 4 in A Major ("Italian").

Mussorsgsky, Pictures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain.

Saint-Saëns, Dans Macabre (as well as his other "tone poems").

Dukas, The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Post-Romantic but brash and programmatic: Holst, The Planets.

Those are pretty lively for starters.

I will check it out.

When I say romantic, I mean "Blue Danube" type lulling to sleep gramma/chamber music. So I may not have the correct terminology there.

I could not figure out the origins of this Allegro song. It was done by a Canada Brass, and the song was entitled simply "I. Allegro" it was on a compilation of rennaisance music. I liked all the horns and how magestic it sounded.

Blue Danube isn't really a Romantic piece, I think. Hardly boring, either, when you really get into it.

Which reminds, me, you should probably listen to Also Sprach Zarathustra. Yeah, we've all heard it a million times, but how many of us have really listened to it? It's pretty dang magnificent.

There's a track from the game "Soul Blade" called "Bravely Folk Song" that sounds like it's what you're looking for. It might also be known as "Cervantes theme."

It's classically inspired with clashing cymbals and bombast... and it sounds really really pirate-esque.

I thought the soundtrack for Master and Commander was darn fine.

When I did Great Expectations, I had to whistle Handel's Harmonious Blacksmith. That was a fun song.

Master and Commander! fuck I should have thought of that.

Plus, the A&E Horatio Hornblower series, I'll bet they have a soundtrack.

Mars is why I recommended The Planets by Holst.

The Conan theme is almost Carmina Buarana. Also by Pouledaris, the theme from Robocop. Awesome.

I was thinking "Hall of the Mountain King" also in this context.

neat

Wasn't The Planets a big influence on John William's Star Wars scores?

Thanks!

This was the perfect reccomendation. I went out to Amazon and they have a track sampler. Its actually not even historically accurate for the most part and includes synth sounds and what not, and while it has some 'mood music' that is not quite what I sought, it was all in all exactly what I was asking for.

What you did I think was the equivilant of someone saying "My goes "Ka-thunk-thunk-thunk" and deciphering that into an alternator problem or something, except for music.

I was also able to find some CDs called "The Captain's Table" or something and it seemed to also have music of the time.

Very good. I am happy.

The only thing left for me to figure out is who is the originator of this "Allegro" song. Here is the thing about that. Allegro appears to be played violin/cello only, harpsichod, full orchastra. The song sounds very similar. So not only is it a style of playing, but there appears to be an actual musical piece.

I did some research and the closest I can figure is that it is Brahms.

You should get a job in a record store!

As to Star Wars, I did purchase some Meco music inspired by Star Wars. I guess the Star Wars theme and the Imperial March are psuedo examples of what I was looking for and probably why I like them.

Thanks again everyone for your help. I actually hadn't expected it.

all day I have been listening to Roundea by "Moret", and several Bach and Handel songs, like this "Aria" and "Trio Sonata".

A band called "Royal Brass". Very elegant.
