Seeing as I would feel perfectly comfortable with the knowlege that you would still be in contact with us, I'd have to say, that's your decision, Boo. Try making a pro and con list. Example: Pro: 24 hour beach access. Con: Earthquakes. See how it balances out.

Short answer - NO!

Long answer - That sounds like the act of a desperate man. Is there a situation, like KF suggested, or maybe a job? There are two important things to consider; it's in California and it is San Diego. One more strike against it and you should drop it like a used donkey.

Only if you thought Ohio had too much culture for you. If yes, then SD is probably right on.

Is this where you were last week?

The weather's boring, the populace is square, you can walk to Mexico, tons of sailors to hit on you, ... you'll just have to decide for yourself.

I was out West last week, near Phoenix. There is a job near SD that I'd qualify for, and my wife and I are thinking of heading out West to be near family.

If Ohio had too much culture for me... heh...

I lived in San Diego for a year. It wasn't for me. (My stint in San Diego ended after I visited San Francisco and moved there shortly thereafter.)

The weather is damn near perfect year-round and the sunsets are beautiful. There are also plenty of beautiful people and there is much beautiful scenery. I just wan't into the beach culture thing, so there wasn't much there for me. Also, the Navy and conservatism pervades everything, so you'll probably be an outcast if you don't wear the flag and vote republican. (I was once cold-cocked by a Navy squid one night while walking down the boardwalk minding my own business. All I could see were the silhouettes of Navy personnel, and I heard one say, "Hey! Watch this!" The next thing I knew I was laying by the side of the boardwalk looking up at the stars. I figure he probably picked me because I had long hair and was chatting with a homeless guy at the time, so he figured I was just a bum. I still have a chipped tooth as a memento of that event. Wow, this is a really long parenthetical, isn't it?!)

There are oases of interesting culture, however. Ocean Beach has a bit of a more bohemian feel to it, and San Diego in general has a thriving medical/biological research community. Then again, it's really nice to just forego culture once in a while and hang out at the Lahaina Beach Club and drink pitchers of beer on the deck at sunset. (Sometimes a pitcher is worth a thousand words.)

I think a large part of my dissatisfaction with San Diego had to do with where I was in my life at that point. If I didn't have the choice of living in San Francisco or Seattle, San Diego might be a decent third choice.

By the way, I wouldn't recommend going to Tijuana. I found it highly depressing. It's a misanthrope's nightmare come to life...

San Diego and San Francisco are two of my favorite cities. (wirthling, you lucky bastard.) I haven't been to either in about 10 years, and people have told me both cities have gone down hill since then. But I know they're still on the Pacific Ocean, and that's good enough for me.

You're on the ocean, the weather's great, you're close to family, it's a change of pace, and you can wear your heart boxers to the beach.

I'd go for it.

P.S. San Diego, a republican town? I never knew that. That city keeps getting better and better.

If that's true, one of my favorite cities is ultra-conservative (SD) and one is ultra-liberal (SF).

It's too bad cities aren't sentient. Then we could have them leg wrestle for water rights.

I vote you move. 'Cause sooner or later I'll be in the Pacific Northwest. And then maybe they'll make some sort of super-duper-monorail that I can take down the coast to visit you.

It's nice for a while, but it gets REALLY boring REALLY fast, because nothing happens there, except of course for the Navy. The local news is really several pages of obituary, followed by a list of who's been caught smoking crack. So don't go there unless you can take the torture of boredom.

Ooh! I forgot to mention something--the Mexican food in San Diego is fantastic. The one thing I miss most about San Diego is Carne Asada burritos with fresh guacamole (you can pick avocados right off the tree and make your own, too)...

Don't forget about the occasional shootings of unarmed motorists by the S.D. police. That was a frequent news story when I was there, anyway...

You should at least wait until after January, when I will be in CLE and will be wanting to get together with locals.

Then, when you're driving through on your way west, I'll already know you and might feel comfortable offering you free crash space for a night.

I lived in SD for about 2 yrs, and most of my family live there, but I still hate it. The people there are snobs, and they never forget your first impression. My dad was in the Navy, so I lived all over the US. I hated San Diego the most.

PS-the ugly houses cost more than a mansion in TN, and some people there are VERY crazy.

Up in Seattle we call folks from the long state "Californicators." Please consider the future ramifications of having ever lived there.

Keith Knight covers San Diego in his comic book convention strips. The second one is more relevant.
