I heard a funky radio scientist over here in Oz, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, talking about how oil is an incredible chemical, full of amazing hydrocarbon chains that are impossible to duplicate, and we waste it by burning it. When we _do_ run out of oil, a lot of industry's are going to be in trouble - plastics (and by extension all those reliant on plastics), medicine, cosmetics, and lots of other manufacturing and scientific fiels. Sure, maybe we'll make an electric or salt-water-powered car, but building the bloody thing is going to be fun with no petrochemicals...
