Very amusing moment on Weakest Link. It was a classic celebrity episode, and Skippy from Family Ties was fucking up. Anne asked him something really painful, and he told her that he liked dominating women (he meant it as an adjective, not a verb). He said, "If you could just say 'who's your mommy?' one time, I'd be in heaven." and Anne broke. I've never seen a contestant crack her up before. I gotta give the props to Skippy for that one... but only for that one.

I find it quite unsavoury watching a load of grown men drooling over a seventeen year old. But maybe that's just me.

Drooling in the metaphorical sense, of course. Before anyone else picks me up on that.

Not metaphorical for me - I shorted out my fucking keyboard...

...and incidentally, Crabby is about the same age as attitudechicka, and he is he only one who appears to be seriously smitten with her (from one photo... hmmmm...) but I am just playing around, and I am quite sure Miss Chicka knows it. If you haven't learned yet that not everything said on here is serious...

Couldn't agree more with that. Some people, and I'm not implying that I think you're one k_v_k, come on here and think that this forum follows the physics of normal forums. But it doesn't. We're all a bunch of wankers who obviously enjoy making people laugh so we have our tongues firmly planted in our cheeks at a much higher clip than most. At least here.

JM? *ponder* JM... Ante-meridian, post-meridian... Juxtaposed meridian?

Oh, Dan - 17:xx AM would be a paradox, rather than a tautology. There's your differentiation!

I think until we start timing with items, we're still sane.

Look at it this way: Dan wrote 82 minutes past the hour. From that it stands to reason that he's extending the bounds of the clock. As such, Occam's Razor suggests that the 17 is not so much a jump from 12-hour AM/PM notation to 24-hour notation, but rather an extension of the PM period beyond 12 "hours" in the same way that he extended the hour beyond 60 minutes.

Not deviating from such a paradigm, why, one may ask, must one be limited to only two meridiems? Hence my suggestion of JM. What's it stand for? I have no idea whatsoever. Why J? Because most of the other abbreviations I came up with (YM, XM, TM, SM, RM, GM, FM, ...) already come with contextual baggage.

Based on Kaufman's post, I hypothesis that Dan is actually on or from the moon Europa. He stated a time of 17:82pm indicating a minimum 36 hour day based on 100 minute hours assuming that each minute is equal to one minute on earth as a base unit of temporal measurement. The total is 3600 minutes or equivilent to 60 earth hours or 2.5 earth days. For a moon/planet to meet the criteria it must have a rotational time exceeding 60 earth hours.

The most likely candidate is Jupiter's moon, Europa, with an 85.228344 earth hour rotation. That equals 5113.70064 minutes (60 * 85.228344). Since we are dealing with a 100 minute hour, that means that a Day on Europa, baring Jupitarian Eclipses, is 51.1370064 hours long. The day is probably calculated as 51 hours, 25am, 25pm, and a noon hour. The remainding time is then added as a "leap day" every 372 days/years. It should be noted that Europa orbits jupiter every single europan day which also makes it a Jupitarian year. The other explanation is that since Europa orbits jupiter at such a high velocity, that Einstein's Theory of Relavitivty comes into play and that the remainding time actually does not exist since Europa is traveling closer to the speed of light than the Earth.

I would elaborate on the solar caculations, but I'm late for my medicine.

Do you have the other half of this locket?

I could do without the "remaining time actually does not exist" heresy, since it does to us in our own referential time frame, and that's all I give a damn about. All the other degenerate time frames can go blow a goat. But speaking of general relativity applying to perturbations in orbit, that's how they finally explained Mercury's orbit less than a hundred years ago.

Mercury, being the closest planet to the sun, undergoes a large enough time dilation due to general relativity that 19th century scientists for years couldn't figure out what the mathematical anomaly in its orbit was. Since Einstein had selfishly decided not to be born yet, scientists of the time used good old classical physics and decided there must be a small inner planet, closer to the sun than Mercury, that hadn't been discovered yet. They dubbed this mythical planet Vulcan. But soon Einstein and his new age love your neighbor hippy ideas came around and Vulcan went the way of the ether.

But I'm guessing you already knew that. I'm just in pedant mode.

Somewhere in there a 2010 parody is waiting to be born -- something about "All these world are belong to you -- except Europa" ...

Except a principal tenet of relativity is that all inertial frames are equally valid, so if Europa doesn't exist to us, we don't exist to them, or something. Luckily, the Europa-Jupiter system moves at such a miniscule fraction of the speed of light that by the time we cease to exist, we will have in reality stopped existing.

Always blaming Albert! Better to blame his parents (and theirs too) for being virgins too long.

Except in that love your neighbor hippy show Star Trek. It is a true Zen wizard who can learn from the contradiction. We should all meditate on it for a week.
