Militias are a little happier now that Clinton and Gore are out and NRA-boy Bush is in. I don't see them worked up enough to do this now. But the Middle East has been escalating.

I don't know if any of you ever read the story 'The Running Man', from Steven Kings earlier work as Richard Bachman in the Bachman Books (I'm sure DexX has), but it ends with the main character driving a large jet into the corporate tower of the people responsible for the Running Man show.

I've often wondered what a plane could do to big ass office tower. I knew that a bomber clipped the Empire State Building in some fog decades ago, but I was curious if a skyscraper could take a full on hit by a big jet.

And now that I know the answer I wish I didn't.

I worked in one of the smaller building of the World Trade Center (there's more than just the towers) for about a month years ago. Those towers are fucking HUGE! I don't know how many of you have seen them up close, but I can't imagine anything that big falling down.

Yeah, I was inside the towers last year. It looked bigger than any building I've ever seen in my life, although the CN Tower claims to be taller (didn't look it to me). It's just lucky (comparitively speaking) they imploded rather than tilting to the side or something, thereby minimizing external casualties.
Speaking of which, does anyone know if the towers took down any of the surrounding buildings?

Capitalism, certainly. But I'm unclear on what capitalist trade and military force have to do with government by the people.

1. Don't do that. It won't accomplish anything. Unless he's causing harm to someone/something, just leave him alone.

2. Socialism is a peaceful and democratic ideology. Radicals of any political background might be responsible for these incidents, but true socialists would not seriously consider such a plan. Don't confuse socialism with Soviet Communism. The US Socialist Party has a brief statement about this morning's events on its web site.

I don't have any speculations about who the attackers might be. The crash in PA sounds unrelated to me, although I did hear on the radio that that plane had been hijacked as well -- I just don't know what targets are close enough to middle Pennsylvania that the plane could have reached them before they had time to prepare/evacuate. Other than that, I must admit to being impressed with the precision with which the attack was executed. And I fully expect the Bush administration to attempt to take advantage of this crisis to help it carry out some misguided plan or other.

DexX, if you gave blood a month ago, perhaps it's being used now. Anything we donate at this point will just help replenish the stores. I'm going to try to call about it when I get home. I may also get on AIM or IRC then, but in the meanwhile, I probably ought to do some work.

Seems to be semi-confirmed - someone locked themselves into a toilet on the flight that went down in Pennsylvania, called 911, and said to the operator, "We've been hijacked! We've been hijacked!" Apparently, he/she stayed on the phone to the operator for quite a while, until there was a loud noise and the line went dead. Chilling...

How scared can they be? These people piloted the planes into the buildings themselves. People who do that shit don't have a great degree of self-preservation instinct, IMHO.

Well, I frankly hope it CAN'T be traced to a single country/leader. I personally don't want to see more bloodshed and violence because of this. Maybe it's selfish, but I'm 18, and I don't want to go to war for this, frankly. I'm willing to help out however I can, but I am not really up for being killed.

Maybe not your everyday hunter by day, militiaman by night, but perhaps some people JUST insane enough to want to make things change. The whole middle-eastern thing IS escelating.
Also, those jets didn't hit dead center, the second one hit the side of the building. Again, you can take flight school and learn most of that stuff in a few weeks. All they had to do was play with a yolk and some pedals. It's not like they were LANDING the planes.

Ladies and gentlement, america has been coming up with amazing acts of violence again and again for the past 30 or so years. Somewhat recently we had kids shooting up schools, a guy blowing up a huge building with a shit bomb, and our "stealth" bomber was shot down. Is it really such an implausibility that these were americans?

Bin Laden is known to have numerous trained pilots amongst his ranks, and an endless supply of suicide mission volunteers. I don't think this describes any domestic group.

Whoever is responsible, I feel a little less proud to be a human being today -- having watched thousands massacred on live television. Fuck this. Fuck the zealous pursuit of any ideology. It always leads to the suffering of many to the delight of a few.
