Yes. There's nothing quite like that feeling of "we liked this," or "we hated this." To be honest, we who spontaneously emote at movies never thought much about "what reason." That's the point. We're not sitting there doing syllogisms.

Talking over the dialogue, or bringing a squawling brat in, or letting your phone ring-- these are capital crimes. Getting swept up in audience moments is just good old unironic fun. Loosen your butt cheeks a smidgen.

I never said I didn't get swept up in a movie, otherwise what would be the point in going? I want to enjoy a movie with my friends the way it was supposed to be enjoyed, and to be honest, if you're sitting on the other side of the cinema, I couldn't give a flying fuck if you're enjoying yourself or not. If I wanted to meet people and interact with them, I'd go to a bar and talk about the movie I've just seen.

Personally I don't see the difference between a squaling brat and an applauding twat.

Look, I enjoy movies differently than you. You like to go see it with your friends, I like to go see them alone so I can honestly and truly enjoy what I'm watching. Ever notice how when you go to see a movie with a group of friends you laugh at things you wouldn't laugh at if you were by yourself? Or how you don't laugh at things you do find funny because it would be considered a faux pas? That's what I hate about the common movie-going experience.

I hope you and your group enjoy the movies you see. I'll enjoy them my way, and we don't have to have any more of a big fat spat over this.

Also, isn't it ironic that Keanu's most expressive role was that of Ted "Theodore" Logan in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure?

All I know is that I go to movies specifically TO get swept up in them. I laugh at things with or without friends, although I rarely ever go to a movie without someone.

Why does anyone clap unless they want to show their approval towards the person they're clapping at? Just to show approval to the other theatergoers? This is the question that is not being answered, which is why this has become a discussion. WHO is the beneficiary of the clapping?

If there IS no beneficiary, then perhaps you can explain why we don't spontaneously clap every time we love something. "That blowjob was AWESOME, baby! BRAVA! BRAH-FUCKING-VAH!"

Please, do not mistake me for someone who wishes to limit freedom of expression or anything of that nature. I would NEVER suggest that such things should be regulated. But if you are free to clap like a jackass at a movie screen to show others, whether they like it or not, that you loved the movie, then I am free and completely within my right to look you in the eye and say, "Hey, jackass, why didn't you just ask everyone if they liked it as much as you did?"

So, we applaud instead of conversing for the same reasons we clap at the end of a live performance instead of saying "I enjoyed that" etc. Although some vocalizing is normal (as you will hear from time to time at the end of a movie) the predominant expression is clapping. It's the gold standard of approval expressions. Once again, all of this has been explained already.

As I explained, the reason to applaud at a live performance is to show the performers how much their performance was appreciated.

The fiancee' and I went to see this movie earlier today. She thought it was good, I thought it was average at best.

By the way, no one clapped at the end here because there was a grand total of 3 people in the theater besides us.
