We were all newbies once.
I don't recall having a particularly bad welcome, myself. But then, I didn't make much of an ass of myself upon introduction, either.
I think the standards of this community are pretty open and welcoming:
- Don't be an ass.
- Try to make funny comics.
- Accept praise and criticism graciously.
These are the three unspoken rules of this pretty-well established community. I don't sense that things are particularly hard for any newbies except those who have acted like jerks (mega_h8 and friends).
As far as I have seen, the funnier you are, the more likely you are to be recieved with open arms. So the community has some standards. Doesn't every community?
The biggest hurdle new folks face is understanding in-jokes and getting a general sense of who is who and what is going on. I had to overcome the same thing. It took a month before I understood what the heck that whole Cowboy Physics thing was about. But, hell... that's the same as in any community.
So, it's just like real life. Only in a computer.
