There are a lot of commandments in the Old Testament (notice the word old- it's important) that imply taking an action that's considered controversial today. We believe in the standards set by these laws (10 commandments, homosexuality an abomination, adultery is evil...), but we don't take the actions offered in the OT. Instead we have the "New" testament, which is the New covenant with the people. When Jesus came, he offered something that the Pharisees and other people who were spiritually dead never saw before... mercy. We believe that its wrong and you will go to hell for being in league with the devil, but you can be saved.

Yes- I belive in the whole bible- the rules of the Old Testament are an older "version" of doctrine.

As for contradictions- there are no contradictions in the bible. If you think there is one, ask me and I can explain it.

God doesn't kill people- people kill people, and yes, he allows it. The bible says "All things work together to them that love God". God won't create a perfect world, the world is here for us to realize that the purpose of our existence is to serve him.

I think that the US, a place started on the right foot for religious freedom for all, is a good government. I think that the society of the US is on a very bad track, and yes, it is unholy.

I agree. I would add more, but then that would pretty much spark more conversing about it.

Because here, as everywhere, everyone has different and passionate feelings on the subject, and when we start to argue about it, everyone gets angry with everyone else, toes get stepped on, and in the end, mysteriously, nobody gets converted, probably owing in part to the fact that we're all mature and thoughtful individuals who have given the question of religion and theology some serious consideration at some point before the present. If you want to debate theology with the people who hang out here, I'd consider it a personal favor if you did so via e-mail or another forum, or at the very least started a separate thread so those of us who'd rather not get involved can avoid reading it. I think at a time like this, when so many people are on edge for various reasons, it's especially important that we be careful not to start any unnecessary fights.

Right, I know we've perhaps stopped talking about this, but I've got one question that's always bothered me about people who are absolutely certain of the existence of Heaven and Hell: why is it sad when people die, if they're just going to a wonderful afterlife? They'll be pleased they've died, and their relatives will see them again soon enough! So surely we should rejoice when people die? I'm not trying to take a pop at the fundies here, I'm genuinely wondering why someone who believes in a paradisian afterlife would think death is a tragic thing.
