I believe that the it has become almost impossible to purchase anything actually "special" or "limited". Take for example the "limited Edition Halo 2" product. No where does it say how limited it is and it is still for sale everywhere even after millions of sales. I guess everything is limited in the fact that there is only so much matter in the universe to make things out of. My problem with "special" and "limited" products is that real specialness requires that a product appeal to a narrow group of consumers and that in itself is reason enough not to market it. To be viable a product needs to appeal to a broad market. This is the definition of "not so damn special".

Anyway... I bought the Halo 2 Limited Edition box partly because I thought it would be special. It is not. I am an gullible ass.

I think they put out a "limited" or "special" edition when they find out something that was not good enough or blatantly wrong about the original. They put "limited" and "special" on it to make people think the new one has some sort of collector's value which will cause its worth to skyrocked, when in fact the collectors are probably more interested in the original which is more "limited" and "special" than the new limited, special edition.

Lucky for me I got my special metal box at the same price as any other copy of halo 2, and it looks "snazzier". Basically, I'm fine with everything. Plus I got a DVD.

I bought both the limited editions of Radiohead's Kid A and Hail to the Thief CDs. It's true that the packaging is quite snazzy, and the artwork on the Kid A disc comes across better than on the regular CD-booklet version, however, both of the discs are difficult to remove from the packaging. In fact, I scratched the Kid A disc the first time I got it out.

To preserve the integrity of both discs, I made copies and put them in separate cases which I now play instead of the originals. So, I spent time and a bit more money making my limited editions look and act like the regular editions.
