Saw this tonight, and as the closing credits rolled I thought "That was pretty good, but not as scary or gruesome as it has been made out to be."
Then, as I walked out of the cinema, I realised my arms were covered in goosebumps that didn't go away for several minutes.
It's a weird one... not "Boo!" scary, not traditionally suspenseful, and while it is certainly violent it is not gory. I think what has disturbed a lot of people is that it is very much an old school horror flick: no in-jokes, no winks at the camera, tongue not even remotely in cheek. It is completely serious. Also following the old-school horror mode, we are not given a shooting gallery of victims, but just three likeable young people, rather than Freddy and Jason's usual two-dimensional screaming bloodbags.
I know Halloween has come and gone, but if you're looking for a scary movie, you could do a lot worse than Wolf Creek.
