Not to mention they are calling grindcore metal. Grind is metal, grindcore isn't.

DX for that comment you are a god

wait, no!

heek

geek of metal

doesnt grindcore stem from metal?

metal is broad and grind stems from it and i thought grindcore came from grind so therefore grindcore would come from the big family metal

wait, i think i got that wrong

ah fuck it

Grindcore and Grind are seperate entities, only similar in aesthetics. Grindcore and Grind are both made by the same type of people, however, grindcore peope listen primarily to hardcore punk, while grind guys listen to deth metal. They are both horribly awesome styles, and have similarities. It's really hard to tell them apart sometimes.

In a way, they both somewhat stem from metal, but technically, Grindcore isn't metal, as it has a punk musical basis.

Mallcore (Slipknot, SoaD and others like that) is a really watered down version of Hardcore, and is partially related, musically, to grindcore. Deathmetal (Death, Morbid Angel) is similar to Grind.

Then there's MarineCore, which involves call-and-response chants or "cadences" backed by dive-bomb guitar leads and machine-gun drumming.

I came down for the opening of the new club in town! I heard they were playing some wicked Grindcore!
It rocks, alright. But technically, it isn't Grindcore. Its just Grind.
Are you people def or just stupid? Its obviously Hardcore.
Mallcore!
Um, I'm afraid you'll have to leave, folks! The club's opening has been delayed due to construction!

I must be one of the few underground metal fans who finds this incessant sub-sub-sub-sub-genre stuff to be more than just a little... umm... anal.

Just wait boorite, I bet in five years that joke will come to reality. :/

Yes, I am elitist, why is that so bad?

I like both grind and grindcore. I like what hardcore I've heard. I don't like mallcore, it's boring to me. People bitch about me putting a label difference on metal and mallcore, but would you call Snoop Doggy Dog classical, or Creedence Clearwater rap? Labels are not there to limit your listening, they're there to let you listen to what you like, and not listen to what you don't. Maybe I am a bit anal about my music, but someone has to be at this point. The kind of music I like is horribly overshadowed by the more commercial style. Surely, I don't think that style is bad just because it's popular, but I don't like the majority of commerical/mainstream music.

One of the main reasons I fight so hard to keep the styles seperate is because I work so hard locally to keep the underground metal scene going. We put on mallcore shows to keep our venue happy, but we also fully support bands that dare to be themselves. IF you like listening to Slipknot, fine. I'd rather listen to Slipknot and Linkin Park than Britney Spears, but that's really not saying much.

By the way, Drexle. IT's not metal, but it's funny, check out Cookie. I dunno who it's by, but it's a parody of Limp Bizkit's "nookie".

Your analogy doesn't stand up - nobody, even an absolute musical illiterate, could mistake bluegrass rock with rap, or hip hop for classical. On the other hand, dividing metal up into such a ridiculous number of subgroups sounds to me like someone trying to make themselves sound more important than they really are. I mean, once you count soft, heavy, thrash, speed, and death metal, you have accounted for all of it. Anything further is just superfluous subdivision. All in my humble opinion, of course.

Thash and speed are similar, very hard to distinguish, and in some people's opinions, interchangable. Grind and Death are very different. Death is often more technical with different sounding vocals. Black metal, gothic metal, power metal, neo-classical, classic metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest), Doom, Gore and probably a couple I've forgotten. They are all easy to tell apart if you actually listen instead of just calling it all crap because it's hard music. I like all real metal, so the genres are just a way of describing something. Saying that you like metal is like saying you like colors. Being descriptive is part of what I like about having a spoken language!

So, yes, I think distinctions are nice to have. They let you ask for exactly the type of music you want to hear. I wouldn't want to go into a music shop looking for a band like Blind Guardian, ask for metal, and get Cannibal Corpse. It would be frustrating trying to listen to what you like. Distinction is a good thing.

I never called any of it crap - I like quite a lot of metal. However, if someone started applying this kind of pedantic differentiation to top-40 mainstream radio pop music, you would probably think they were insane, or at the very least wasting their time.

Am I wrong?

Actually, I do that myself. I don't listen to pop any more than it's forced down my throat, but I do have casual observations, and I could easily categorize the different styles of pop. I'm sorry, but my mind has a natural logical lean toward categorization. I like to find more of what I like, and avoid what I dislike. Is that really so wrong to everyone? To me, I hear a HUGE difference between different styles of metal, let alone radio rock and metal. Yes, I am pedantic to a 'T', at least when it comes to music. I like what I like, and I don't like what I don't like.

Well, since my musical taste is extremely broad, I don't have that problem.

Rock tends to be my favourite style, but I like pretty much everything except the heaviest of metal, the most braindead of pop, the most repetitive of dance, and pretty much all rap/hip-hop/whatever.

I happened to put on a J. S. Bach MP3 today and was almost hypnotised by it... I am not listening to anywhere near enough barique/classical/romantic these days.
