Actually, I've heard a lot of goths call them "Spooky Kids", but that's more in reference to people who think Marilyn Manson is tr00 g0th met4k!
As for what goth is now? Medieval dress helps, dark clothes, usually black, blue, or purple (or a mix thereof), makeup presents a more goth appearance, but isn't neccesary, and the attitude is the final part. Goths often are drawn to the more "horror-show" aspect of life. Graveyards, dark moody music, bats, caves, necro-anything... I could be a goth I suppose, but I prefer to call myself a metalhead.
"Goth" was a middle-european tribe that settled around Germany everntually.
"Goth" was then a very popular architecture style with sweeping arches and such, really a VERY beautiful style (I recall this girl, Melanie, recounting her trip to Europe and saying "Pshh, I didn't see anything gothic about those cathedrals, they weren't even painted black!).
"Goth" at some point indicated a style of clothing, which usually included a large selection of dark or pure black attire. Goths today don't hold themselves to simple black, as it can grow boring. Dark is still the style, but it has moved to reds, blues, purples, and even greens.
Goth means all these things to different people, and only one or two to others. It means all of them to me. :)
