Ok. Quite a few of us have had this thought at one time or another and it's time to get the ball rolling. We're going to put together a serial comic. Everybody's welcome, you just need to wait your turn before you post.

We could just make things a free-for-all, but then they're always the chance of two or more people working on and posting comics at the same time which could lead to confusion. I'm sure we can make things confusing enough the way it is.

I made a list of all the people who expressed interest in the 'Another Brilliant Idea' post. Then I wrote all the names on little pieces of paper and threw them into a coffee cup. Then I made more little pieces of paper with names on them and threw them into a coffee cup with no coffee in it.

For those nerds out there like me you'll be glad to know I measured out all the slips of paper to make sure they were the same size.

Here's the list I ended up with:

1. boorite
2. jael
3. obijo
4. big evil dan
5. bunnerabb
6. gabe
7. descolada
8. bottlerocket
9. wirthling

When I get home tonight I'll slap 'em onto a web page so we can have an easy reference to change when more people show up and join in.

That's it.

So boorite gets to start us off. Take it away.

Shit, if none of you have seen the last paragraph of Comic Contest XVII, you may have to skip me and move me to the end of the cycle. I'm gonna be in snowy Colorado all week next week, and will not have access to Al Gore's Internet.

Yeah, I'm really really sorry and am going to really kick my self for missing the first round of the Serial Comic, but I'm going to check out a college and go "roughneck" in the mountains of CO during the freak snowstorms they keep having.

Hoping not to die and have my remains eaten by my Dad, who's driving up there with me.

You all packed, son?
Sure am dad. All the gear is in the car and I filled up the tank this morning.
Good, good. And did you rub that meat tenderizer all over you this morning like I asked.
Yeah, that was kinda weird. What's that for again?
Uh, it keeps away those big Colorado black flies. They can be a real bitch.
Oh..

I thought you said you weren't leaving until Monday? There's only two more people that need to post before your turn is up, and one of them is me. So I reckon it shouldn't take too long. We just have to make sure desc is on the ball.

Geez, bottlerocket's strips have sure gone downhill lately.
It's as if he's lost all feel for the visual medium, to say nothing of "all your base" references.
Back at bottlerocket's dad's...

Yahoo for overtime! I worked at the phone company in Rochester, NY for about five months and some of the guys who had been there a while were telling me about the motherload of all OT.

The phone system is actually run off an assload of big batteries, which is why your phone still works when the power goes out. The batteries are kept constantly charged by the power, and if it were to fail, will continue to run for maybe 8-12 hours.

A few years before I moved to Rochester they had an ice storm that pretty much shut the city down for a week. All over transformers were blowing up and lines were snapping due to the weight of the ice.

So for times like these, the phone companies has big portable diesel generators. They drive them to a central office, hook them up to the batteries and charge them up. The charging apparently takes a pretty long time; at least a couple of hours. When they're done, they unhook everything and drive to the next CO and do it again. After a few cycles, they need to head back to the first one because the power is about to run out again.

Since there really wasn't anything they could do, most of the guys would hook things up and crawl into the truck to sleep.

Some of these guys worked all week long with no breaks. We're talking about maybe 120-140 hours of OT; probably some double or even triple time.

That would be sweet.

On the other side of the spectrum is my wife who has in the past couple years worked an awful lot for very little. She's doing her residency and she salaried. They also seem to take this time to work them like dogs. She was doing a trauma surgery rotation which was 32 hours on, 16 hours off for an entire month. She never really did much at home except sleep. If you worked it out she was probably making less than minimum wage that month.

So get while the gettin's good! Suck up the OT and stick it to the man. And if you can swill and post comics at the same time, more power to you.

Good God. I respect anyone who can work that much. I usually have to use a few hours of PTO (paid time off) at the end of a pay cycle because I'm so Goddamn lazy. I'ts just that I had to make up for 2 days of leave that I'm taking without pay next week that I worked so much this week.

Something many "professionals" have learned when htey decided to dome to Austin Radiological Association. Lots of salary thrown around at very little expense to the doctors who run the company and drive Lotuses and Ferrari's.

And here's another even sicker thing in terms of OT... My dad is a radiologist and has the freakiest work ethic I've ever seen. I'm not really sure what his reason behind it is, but he's been going to work at 4 in the morning as long as I can remember. (Yeah, yeah... I'm sure it was so he didn't have to look at me. Ha.)

Anyhoo, he was salaried. I'm sure he didn't have to start until 8 or 9 like the normal people did. But every day, in at 4. So voluntarily the man was working 12 hour days instead of 8.

So that means for the 30 years he worked, he put in an extra 15 years for the clinic that he never got paid for.

And he doesn't seem to think it's a big deal. I think it's freaky beyond belief.

Isn't it great just how fucked up the Western world's priorities are? Doctors and nurses have a rather important job - they stop people from dying. In return for this vital service, they get fuck all wages, work longer hours than GOD, and not much in the form of other benefits.

However, if you are skilled in swinging a piece of wood and using it to send a leather-wrapped ball of wood and rubber a long distance, you end up in danger of suffocation because of all the money being dropped on you from the backs of trucks.

Things are pretty whacky...

Amen to that. There's a restaurant/bar place here in Cleveland that has menus they print each month with all sorts of different stuff on them; trivia and the like. The also always have a poll on them, which you can fill out and give to the server. They count up the votes and the results show up on the next month's menu. There are also about 6 or 7 of these places around Cleveland, so you get to see results from all the locations.

A couple of months ago the question was "Are professional athletes overpaid?". There were about 400-500 who responded from the various locations and not one person had answered no. Which I thought was strange. Because here in Cleveland we just lost one of our star ball players (bunner, help me out here. I don't follow sports enough to remember the name.)

Anyhoo, they were trying to get together like a $20 contract for him to stay! It seems to me that if you paid athletes a few hundred thousand dollars, they should be more than happy. I'm sure part of this is all the franchises that own the teams that are greedy. If everyone took less money, I assume they'd still have enough to pay for all the stuff they needed, but they could lower ticket costs for the fans. So in retrospect, I suppose it's the fans fault for being willing to pay huge amounts for tickets.

I guess I should say more power to the people setting the ticket prices. If I was in a position to charge $20 or $60 for a ticket, and I knew they'd sell out either way, you can be damned sure it'd charge $60. I guess that makes me a hypocrite. It's a moot point, since I don't spend money on sporting events.

But I can say the same thing about movies. $20 million for a lousy roll? That's more money than 20 or 30 average joes will make in their entire lives.

I'll just bitch about this until I make it into the ranks of the rich and famous, then I'll complain about my inability to buy my own Gulfstream because of how little I get paid.

Or I could always follow through on my plan to kidnap Russell Crowe.
