A friend and I were talking over a couple of pitchers of beer (The same way the topic "which animated character would you do" arose), when the topic of favorite/hated xmas movies. We both said it wasn't Xmas if we missed the "Charlie Brown Christmas Special" and the original Chuck Jones' version of "The Grinch". The barmaid agreed and shook her jubblies at us for a bigger tip. We also both hated "It's a Wonderful Life" and wonder how many people committed suicide in order to avoid seing it again.

I later thought about Xmas songs while being showered with them at the mall. My favorites are "Silent Night" by Tom Waits and a rythmn and blues version of "We Three Kings" by the California Raisins.

So in this most jolly of seasons, what are your thumbs up and thumbs down.

Best: Those old Firestone Christmas albums.

...Trot and Cap'n Bill were free from anxiety and care. Button-Bright never worried about anything. The Scarecrow, not being able to sleep, looked out of the window and tried to count the stars.

Worst: That "A spaceman came a-travelling" or whatever it's called by Chris De Burgh. Also that one about the guy who gets killed in a war at christmastime.

I like the "Granma got run over by a reindeer" song, though I'm not sure of the proper title.
And if I don't catch the old stopmotion one about Rudolph, as well as the one with Heat Miser and Snow Miser, I go bananas.

It's A Wonderful Life is the fourth-worst film I've ever seen, after Twister, Proof of Life and Exit Wounds.

I guess my worst Christmas was when I was about ten and my parents stopped celebrating all holidays, including my birthday, Halloween, Easter, everything (religious reasons) and I stood there for a minute when I woke up and said "So... no Christmas." Nothing too tragic.... I knew it was coming and the feeling passed quickly, but I've never bothered with it much since, if I could help it.

There's this band that I see often, they play at the place where I work, as well as around town - great band called "Rock Shop" - and they do a cover of The Pretenders "2000 Miles". When I hear that, when I hear her sing that.. it's Christmas. I could not hear so much as a "Merry Christmas" or see one Christmas show or do ANYthing Christmasy. As long as I hear that song, it's Christmas.

Best: "A Christmas Story" as well. The dogs mangling the turkey and then the Chinese waiter lopping the head off the duck kill me no matter how many times I see it. Last year, I was moved to mangle some Ultima IX screencaps to parody it:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

As far as audio goes, Cheech and Chong's "Santa And His Old Lady" is my personal favorite.

Worst: Actually, there aren't many Christmas movies that make me dry-heave, but yeah, "It's A Wonderful Life" probably comes closest.

There was this SNL skit I saw where Santa's wife was complaining he never helped and Santa(John Goodman) started ranting about how many little Jappanese boys there were. I thought that was pretty funny.

Best: the heat miser/freeze miser songs from whatever special that was.

worst: (TMI alert):

One year, a few months before XMas, a 3 year relationship had ended (badly). I'd dated 2 men off and on, casually, but I was gonna be spending Xmas alone. I saw few of my friends that Xmas, and got almost no cards or presents from anyone other than my parents.

The one memorable thing I DID get for Xmas that year was an STD, a legacy from either one of the guys I'd dated in the prior months, or maybe from the cheating bastard I'd broken up with in early fall. Luckily, I discoved it by december 23, and got treatment before the doctor closed office hours for the holiday.

Believe me, if you ever get a "lump of coal" in your "stocking" for Xmas, you'll laugh about it one day. But not then.

Thank FUCK someone else knows about these. I still have one from when my dad worked at the gas station that gave them away. I've gotta get a better digital version made some day, the poor think is nearly worn through. Firestone and the company that recorded them don't have the masters anymore.

Also I have a VHS tape of the claymation xmas special made when the California Raisins where big. Fuck them, but the rest of it is my favorite xmas special to date.

I also like the move A Christmas Story about the boy growing up in northern Indiana - the one that inspired the Wonder Year show but was WAY better.

You know, I still have my old turntable. I should get a bunch of those old albums on eBay (there are tons of them really cheap), hook the turntable to my sound card, and make some MP3s. I did it with some old 45s a while back, and they came out passably well.

Best: It's A Wonderful Life, The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl's "Fairytale of New York," Shawn Colvin doing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," and everything Rankin-Bass has ever produced.

Worst: A Christmas Story. I've hated that movie since it first came out.
