By 1608 Jamestown was falling apart. John Smith forced the colonists to plant crops, build, and trade with the natives to build a better relationship.

In 1608 the virginia Company did not send enough food to sustain the newly enlarged colony. This was known as the "starving time". Many people were forced to eat dogs, cats, and boots.

Lord De La Warr created strict laws that said that everyone who did not farm was either imprisoned or killed. Although it was strict it improved the colony.
