Shannon Hoon was the lead singer of Blind Melon. The group was named after bluesman Blind Lemon (ah, anagram) Jefferson. Their big song was "No Rain" (from the early 90s--don't know exact dates). The video for said song featured the infamous "Bee Girl." Hoon died of a drug overdose not long after his band had made it big.

As for "self lick," just use your imagination...
