In case you're not confused enough about which music thread is which, let's continue the progression of shrinkage from albums to singles to notes...

If you were stuck on a desert island, but could bring a piano with 10 keys working, which keys would they be?

My list:

The bottom key (A)
C two octaves below Middle C
G an octave and a half below Middle C
D almost an octave below Middle C
G# a few notes below Middle C
Middle C
F half an octave above Middle C
F# an octave and a half above Middle C
E two-plus octaves above Middle C
The top key (C)

If you could only take ten sounds with you to a desert island, what would they be? Describe them in terms of wavelength and frequency.

You are a silly, silly man.

Obviously you could only have keys that would allow you a complete song, and with only ten keys, it'll have to be Chopsticks or Heart and Soul let's see...

Chopsticks, you'll need from the F below middle C up to the A above it. That's exactly ten keys.

Heart and Soul, the left player will need the notes for the chords C, Am, F, G. That's F, G, A, B, C, D, E, G, taking up eight keys. Doesn't leave a helluva lot for the poor old right-hand pianist.

Only ten piano keys ? Well, id have to take all the keys from middle C to C-2, now that is twelve, so i'd drop 2, those being Gb/F# & Db/C# Which would allow me to play all the C modes except Phrygian. That would permit playing just about every song written. A little boring being all based off C, but at least you could really play music.

Ahh, 5 years of being a Music Major in college and I'm a computer tech, go figure.

Well if you know their wavelength, you'll know their frequency, and vice versa. Assuming you know wave velocity, which would be the speed of sound, the two are related by:

frequency = (speed of sound)/wavelength

That said, I will take 220Hz, 246Hz, 262Hz, 294Hz, 311Hz 330Hz, 349Hz, 392Hz, 440Hz, and 528 Hz.

Why is there so much literature discussed here and so little science? It's probably for the best. The addition of science would cut the last strand I have to the outside world.

I don't know the reasoning behind your adherence to the lower midrange band of the human hearing rage as a controlling device in an environment where hearing is of great import to your chances of survival, but Fletcher and Munson, as acoustic physicists; created a useful and oft referenced paradigm for the use of equalisation by mapping the human auditory response. It peaks between 1 to 3dB above nominal (flat) between 800Hz and 4Kz in order to accentuate the range of human speech. This was an im-measurable contribution to the growth of the species, and to the use of language as it's primary construct for intellectual evolution.

My frequencies of choosing, within the narrow construct of this post -assuming that I had endless control over them- would be:

100Hz - the bass knob on almost every stereo built.

160Hz - Glue.

250Hz - Mud.

315Hz - Barking.

430Hz - More barking

630Hz - Yarp.

1.6Khz - Quack

3Khz - Bite... ow.

4.3Khz - Chisel in the ear

10Khz - Sibilance for days. The treble knob that follows the 100Hz bass knob for most home stereos.

Thank you.

Those are the frequencies you tune midrange notes on a piano to. Or so I've heard:

http://tyala.freeyellow.com/4scales.htm#Equal

I'd like to switch my 528Hz to 630Hz, since I don't think I can live without Yarp.

2. HP brown sauce
3. banana
4. cheese and onion crisps
5. chips
6. cornish pasty
7. fried spam
8. fried egg

10. onion gravy

my desert island trousers and desert island haircuts will follow shortly, unless there is some kind of 'desert island backlash'.

Wait on... Isn't C-2 two C's below middle C? Damn this text... Hey! Brad! Program a way to write sheet music and post it on the forum in the next 24 hours. Thanks!

Hey! Even one octave, including the black keys, is 13 notes! It would only be twelve if you omitted either the top or bottom C.

Why the fuck are we talking about this???
