Actually, the right to put "fuck" on a t-shirt was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1971 (Cohen v. California). This does not mean, of course, that your local government and police won't deem your t-shirt offensive and arrest you, but they will lose in the end. A few cases have made it as far as state supreme courts but have gotten shot down there. Naturally, there are always legislators trying to criminalize words they don't like, but there is a good deal of precedent supporting free expression in this area.

The aftermath is that I never did receive a reply, but I got bored with the boycott and went back with friends while I was in Cleveland. I'm sure they don't even know the difference.
