I am waiting for the day I can have Donald WcRonald have a conversation with Scientist.

Here's some more background ideas:
- Supermarket

- Bank

- Museum

- Darkened movie theatre

- Jury room (background is a table and 10 other jurors going to the vanishing point)

- Line (background is a line of people going to the vanishing point.)

- Tennis net between characters

- Basketball hoop in background (soccer, football, whatever)

- Roller Coaster (I was thinking 1st person perspective, but that might be hard to do with character position -- especially full-body characters.)

- Shooting range (target paper in background - maybe a black mickey mouse's head as the target on it)
- Zoo (something about squirrels and donkeys visiting a zoo cracks me up)

- Boat (so we don't have to assume characters are on a boat when we use the water background)
These aren't all requests. Just brainstorming for you.

One more thing. You ever consider making the backgrounds so that there's a botom corner of the wall showing? For instance, let's say you do the museum background and make a corner just right of center, so there are two walls showing, the back wall and the the right wall. Then a left character could be looking at the right wall (with a painting on it for the museum example) if there's no right character present, or a right character if one is added. This corner method would also be interesting for cut-off characters vs. full-body characters, further emphasizing the depth of field.

Just a suggestion. :)

Thanks for the suggestions, Obi. Lots of interesting ideas. Some of the just aren't possible, at least not with my limited skills, and others wouldn't really get much use (the rollercoaster fits in both categories - I doubt it could be done, and it would barely get used).

That said, I did an extremely ugly bedroom this afternoon and sent it to Brad. I also resent those damned dolphin tails so he can replace the one that is missing from the site.

It's funny you should word it like that. I originally had those background suggestions separated into two different groups: ones that would definitely work, and ones that may be too specific.

The supermarket idea would be the one I'd push the most. It would get a lot of use. As would other typical locations like a hospital or a school.

We should have a Mystery Science Theater-esque background.

Not a background... a character. The silhouettes of Joel and the bots and the theater seats as one character that can be applied to any background. You could use them as character 2 in any panel, or as character 2 in the last panel for comics that stretch across the whole 3 panels.

I think I'm gonna try to draw up some characters.

Every time I think this is a good idea I end up chickening out cause it seems so hard to get it just right.
I'm gonna try to draw some stuff and maybe Brad will be nice and put some of it up.

I start by drawing in pencil on paper. When I get an outline I am satisfied with, I draw over the major lines with a fine black felt-tipped pen and rub out the pencil. I then scan the image into the PC, and do some filter tricks to make it nice black lines on a pure white background. I then fiddle with it in Corel PhotoPaint - PhotoShop is wonderful for photo editing and effects, but you can't draw in it for shit. I use a little trick I worked out to add a thicker black outline to the image (I'll explain how if anyone wants to know) and then I use PhotoPaint to colour it (again, I found a really good way to do this and I will explain it if anyone cares).

Now, some tricks for shrinking the image and making a transparent GIF. First, never do the shrinking with a limited palette - make sure you have the full range of colours (24-bit RGB) enabled before resizing. Next, Do some kind of flood fill on the background, using a colour that is not used anywhere in the image. It is VITAL that you make sure anti-aliasing is turned off before you do the fill. The transparency will generally look pretty good if the tolerance of the flood fill is 60 or over, but I aim for 75 to be safe. This should not be a problem if you have made sure the black outline is nice and thick.

The next step is for Brad - when you reduce the palette so it can be saved as a GIF, try to go below 256 colours. Don't sacrifice image quality for it, but get the number of colours as low as you can. Most of mine are 32 colour, though some are more and some are less. As I recall, the fire has two, the reaper has eight, and skagg has sixty four.

Hope this has helped.

Definitely. I'm thinking about drawing a couple of characters for fun. I'm not that great of a freehand artist, but am pretty good on the computer, so we'll see how they turn out.

I know a lot of people have submitted art that doesn't get in, so I don't fool myself that mine will. It's more of a way to try to still contribute to the site, since I get 10 hours a month online and I've already used 2 on December 1st.

Ten hours a month online? Why?

If you need to conserve your online time, sometimes what I do is lay out the dialogue for my strip in Word table first. This is especially helpful if I'm working though an idea or I have a log of dialogue.

Because I'm on netzero and those evil bastards changed their free account from 30 hours to 10 hours about a month ago.

That's a good idea. I was going so far as to save webpages then log off, then delete the pages after I'd read them.

It's not too bad though. I wanted to do some other hobbies too (like go outside), so I'll get a chance to do that now.

Maybe you could add a couple of other free ISPs to the mix:

http://www.address.com/main.asp?addressref=allfreeisp&p=freeinternet

http://www.juno.com/home_index3.shtml

I'm not saying you should replace NetZero, but if they all have limits, maybe you'll get up to a total of 30 hours by using more of them.

Why don't you draw them yourself? How hard can it be to draw some lips?
