I think I heard a new release with some ska in it. It's "I Love You 'Cause I Have To" by Dogs Die in Hot Cars. The verses strike me as ska-like. These guys are pretty good. They're also from Glasgow.

Yes, ska is fun. As a musical style it's upbeat, catchy and keeps your fingers snapping. I understand that some folks won't like it but why the venom? Did ska stand you up at the prom or run over your dog?

It's upbeat, but I wouldn't say it's fun. Most of the ska I've heard is like Anglicized Reggae. It's terrible.

I'd rather listen to reggae.

What I enjoyed about the ska-ish parts of "I Love You Because I Have To" is that the skritchy backbeat rhythm guitar leaves sonic room for the vocals. In this and in exploring the guitar's sonic potential beyond CHUNKA CHUNKA and KERRRAAASSSHHH, Dogs Die in Hot Cars is earning its pay.

What others say about boorite!

I saw a pretty decent Ska band last year, but they only played much older stuff, so I don't know about ska from the last fifteen years. The band I saw was like reggae-on-meth.

I did see a band called the RX Bandits (who are apparently Ska-ish)a few weeks ago and they didn't do much for me. Some interesting songs, but subpar musicianship.

We played at a show with a ska band called the Independents one time. Their lead singer looked exactly like Glenn Danzig and the rest of them looked like different scary people (I thought the keyboard guy looked like Count Chocula). Anyway, they were a good time.
