I would still like four panel comics. I have a couple that would be absolutely brilliant in four panels, but I had to stoop to a mere three panels and thus they lost teh funneh.

I might be able to make something for this, I'll give it some thought. Can you give me some examples of comics you'd like to convert?

These two, when they got on the Toprated page, made me realize they'd be much better if they really were made with less panels:

[Click to view comic: 'Rules of Life']

[Click to view comic: 'CC 135: All I could think of']

But when I tried editing the two panel one, it hadn't changed at all after I saved it. I decided it wasn't that big a deal... then I looked at my list of newest comics and saw it had made an entire new comic, which was supposed to be the edited version of that old one.

Huh, I just played around with editing some comics and couldn't duplicate that problem.

Also the main problem with changing panel numbers is how do we determine what you want imported from the old comic and where? I could let you just pick panels. Like say (for your second comic) "load up comic 80995 as a one panel comic, and just import panel 2" would be pretty easy.

The first comic though is trickier, how do I let you specify that you want half of panel one and half of panel 2?

Or am I overcomplicating it and you'd be fine if I just gave you a way to cut that comic down to one or two panel, and then you could just fill the rest in?

I don't even care about it erasing what was already in the comics when I try to change the number of panels. I expected that, so I had the original version in a different window so I could just copy everything. The fact that it wouldn't let me change an already made comic is the bad part. Lemme try again and see if there's still that problem...

Still makes a new comic with two panels if I try to edit something to two panels.

So let me get this straight here... you try to edit any of your 2 panel comics and when you update it, it saves a new one instead of updating that comic?

I've been updating a two panel comic here and it's not doing that. Annoying. I'll take a look at the source tomorrow and see if I can figure out why it might be doing that.

As for the panels thing, I can probably make it so you can tell it to edit a comic, but just import the first 1 or 2 panels. That's probably be the easiest thing to write anyway and I assume the feature will have limited use after people fix up their old comics.

I'd like to be able to edit a 3 panel into a two or possibly one panel comic as well. I don't care if everything gets erased, it's not hard to remember 3 panels of comics or open it in another window, like Neovid said, to "cheat" off of. It's just harder to have to make a whole new comic in 2 or 1 panel format and then have to go back and delete the old 3 panel comic.

Yep. I just noticed that what it's doing exactly is sending me to "make" instead of "edit" when I switch it to two panels.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, NeoVid isn't, from a technical perspective, trying to edit a two-panel comic. He's trying to edit a comic that's in the system as three panels, but would be better as two. He begins by editing a three-panel comic, then, without saving anything, clicks "switch to two panel layout", which doesn't save anything about the comic that was already there -- not its number, nor even the fact that it was an existing comic that was being edited. Clicking that button always starts a new comic that will get a new ID number if it's saved.

The bottom line, I think, is that people want a way to change the number of panels in a comic while still keeping the comic's old number, thus preserving both its order in their archive, and any existing forum posts in which it's displayed. If that means they have to copy and paste everything and basically just rewrite the comic from scratch, so be it -- the ID number is what's important.

If there could be some way to ease the process of switching a comic -- an old one, or one that's still in the process of being written -- from one panel format to another, then so much the better. It's my opinion that a perfect system -- e.g. one that detected which panel of a 3-panel comic was already blank, or one that let you give complex instructions like "take the characters from panel 1 and the dialog from panel 2 and put them into the new panel 1" -- would be way too much trouble to code. Just rig up something simple like "keep the last two panels when switching from 3 panels to 2" (on the assumption that the last panel is usually, if not always, where the punchline is). Or don't. We can copy and paste with the best of them.

Or maybe, like the characters and backgrounds that have dropdown lists, the existance of a panel could have a, "none," option.

Thanks for the explanation, I wasn't getting what was going on.

I changed the way the editor works and it should behave (mostly) as expected now. If you edit a comic and switch to X panels, it will load that comic inside of an X panel length strip. When you update, it will be saved as that number of panels.

Right now there's a bug when you load comics into the editor with a different number of panels. It only displays the first panel of the original comic or something. I'll fix that when I've got some more time to spend on it. I figured you'd want this feature regardless of that little problem.

Let me know if there are any issues with it. Also 1 panel comics are now selectable above the comic editor.
