At last...a review of "At Last...Fuzzyman's Fourth Mix" by umfumdisi:
Nineteen versions of the same track? Let the sonic experiment begin!
19. RAY ANTHONY - Yes, I had to cheat and hear the original version first, but only for the sake of comparison. First impression--fairly standard (but quiet) big band 40s-style presentation. The trumpet solo stands out.
01. ETTA JAMES - Well, of course, I've heard this version. Etta just sounds like the blues. Excellent.
02. HARRY WARREN - Silky instrumental. Much more polished than the original if perhaps lacking in impact.
03. THE TEMPREES - It's time for androgyny! Okay, the lead voice is definitely male, but the others are questionable. You know, I always thought Leo Sayer was a woman until I saw him. Oh, and the 79s "porn" guitar give this one a creepy edge--waka-wow, waka-wow.
04. GENE HARRIS & SCOTT HAMILTON - I can't describe this any differently than fuzzy did on his liner notes. One thing I did have trouble hearing was the sound of Hamilton's skates.
05. LOU RAWLS & DIANE REEVES - I'm not a big fan of vocal Jazz, but Rawls is cool, and he and Reeves make a great duet team. Good choice for your wedding reception.
06. HOUSTON PERSON - Big tenor sax and elegant guitar.
07. CHRISTINA AGUILERA - Haw-haw! At times, I thought Bobcat Goldthwait had taken over the microphone. This track is an excellent example of someone who can sing yet has not a clue how to sing this song.
08. MILES - A passable version. Miles usually gives ballads a better treatment than this, so I'm wondering when and where it was recorded--maybe during his early heroin years or later lost-his-chops years.
09. EVA CASSIDY - Excellent again. Clean and natural.
10. BLUESIANA HOT SAUCE - Sultry.
11. CELINE - Much better than Aguilera--even if the string arrangement is a bit over-the-top.
12. GLENN MILLER - Pretty bland for Glenn Miller.
13. JULIA DEMATO - You heard a "hint" of passion?
14. DIANNE SCHUUR & B.B. KING - B.B. sounds great on vocals and guitar.
15. TEMPTATIONS - The vocals are good, or maybe I was distracted by the PHAT beat.
16. JOAN OSBOURNE - Pretty good. Has just a hint of country flavor with that steel guitar. However, I wish this version had been done by Ozzy Osbourne!
17. ELLA FITZGERALD & JOE PASS - Understated, yet fetching. Ella doesn't oversing, and Joe gives the music a beautiful treatment.
18. STEVIE NICKS - Now that you've mentioned Stevie sounds like a "goat in heat," I can't hear anything else!
19. RAY ANTHONY - The last. After hearing all the other versions, this one comes off a bit better. the trumpet is still smokin', and the chorus lends an otherwordly quality.

Once again, fuzzy hits the mark with an outstanding concept and excellent delivery. I thought I might be bored to tears by a disc full of different takes on one song, but the stylistic variety and well-planned sequencing provides an excellent look into how different artists can breathe life into an "old chestnut." Excellent. Thanks, man of fuzz.
