I don't know what I'm doing either

Short liner notes for my CD are here if you're interested. I ran out of time to print cover art, and I debated about completely changing the entire concept of the disc, not that it had one beyond "put some music on a disc and burn/send it out before your boss catches you."

I still want to make a mix-tape affair, which will be able to include some of my vinyl collection, which is a lot more challenging listening, and maybe more interesting. I'll have to put that on the back burner for now.

I had another listen to kramer's other disc:

quote:
:O

The Bug - Killer (feat. the Rootsman and He-Man)
The Bug does almost unlistenable Industrial Dancehall Ragga. I have seen him live twice and it is an incredible experience. Someone described it as "Skinny white boys dancing to big black music".

In-ter-est-ing....

quote:

Turbonegro - I Got Erection

Not all that gay sounding. Did I miss something? Sound like Group X, if you know who they are.

quote:

Vitalic - La Rock 01

Pretty decent club track, would fit well in any set I'd go to see.

quote:

The All Seeing I - Walk Like a Panther

Yeah, student song. Good memories.

quote:

Loki - What we get up to

'Weegie stoner rap - bloody, bloody funny. The best part is when Ian says "Stay off the drugs". Ha Ha Ha!

quote:

Enon - Daughter in the House of Fools

Never really gets going for me, but sure...

quote:

Girls Aloud - No Good Advice

I like this coz you can sing "My Sharona." over the verse.
quote:

80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Psychosis Safari

Don't really rate these guys but this is fairly cool stuff.

quote:

DJ Format - Vicious Battle Raps

Did this guy have a cold when he was rapping this? He's inhaling through his nose a lot a hell of a lot. Top irony value.

quote:

Shockheaded Peters - I Bloodbrother Be

Shock Headed Peter was this character from German children's books, who featured in some pretty graphic cautionary tales for kids. Like the book, this is graphic but sticks in your head. Quite funky jazz when it gets down to it.

quote:

Franz Ferdinand - Michael

Michael is the boy we enjoy, but I get the feeling you'd have to pay for his services by the sound of it.

quote:

Dizzee Rascal - I Luv U

a) He can pronounce words slowly and correctly, so that us white fogeys from outside the M25 can understand.
b) The content's average but see a)
c) The production is not great, but it doesn't sound amateurish - see a)
d) This kind of music is what all the 14 year old inner city kids listen to, hence it's "cool". See a)

That's why Dizzee Rascal won the Mercury.

quote:

Dr Octagon - I'm Destructive (Instrumentalist version)

Sounded nothing like Dr. Octagon to me, but well atmospheric. Fits in well.

quote:

The Creepers - Baby's on Fire

Quite good, sorry I've got nothing more specific than that.

quote:

Sons & Daughters - Johnny Cash

My kind of music, the Scottish accents make it interesting.

quote:

The Fall - Kurious Oranj

YOU WILL ALL FEEL MY POWER! REEE! I see why John Peel rates The Fall so highly now.

quote:

Le Tigre - Deceptacon
Decepticons!
Major fluff under the needle, but it sounded like there was a Kim Wilde kind of punk-pop tune under here.

Kramer--
I've really been enjoying :|. Rather than writing an extensive review, I'll say that there are some real gems on that disc, and just when I think I've listened to the best song on the disc, the next song comes on and I like that one even more. I haven't really been in the mood for :O lately, but I'm definitely saving it for the right moment.

jes--
Yours hasn't arrived yet--hopefully any day now.

Your CD still hasn't shown up. Did you send any illicit substances with it that would cause it to get stopped at the border? Remember, I sent out a revision to my address because a number had been transposed in the original groupings e-mail.

NOOO! I read the wrong address!

Anyway, this ties in with what I was going to say to the other two people still waiting for swap CDs from me on the side. I've been stupidly busy at work and haven't had a chance to mail them out. But I'll do so by Thursday, plus a copy of mine for choad, if he can pm me with his real address?

Replacement backup disc's en route to choad, and I've dispatched 1 of 2 remaining side swap CDs I owe.

Went to All Tomorrow's Parties last weekend and got to see Turbonegro, Mogwai, Kid 606, plus a few other mental wicked indie acts.

Your CD arrived today, and I'm listening to it right now as I do laundry. I'm only on track 5, but I'm digging the hell out of this.

Kramer--
I had a chance to finally give :0 another listen. I popped it in after a 40-mile bike ride as I was cooling down, but still full of adrenaline--the two worked well together, and I really enjoyed the mix. I'm afraid to put the CD in my car cd player since I already drive too fast.

The day I got your CD, I popped it in, listened to it, then played it again when it was over. Two friends came over in the middle and asked that i start it over when it ended, so I got three listens the first night. On Saturday, I played it in the car and my passenger kept pulling out the jewel case so he could see what song/artist we were listening to.

Great job. I have a few bands to research now, particularly James Taylor Quartet--that's my favourite tune on that disc.

Another smashing product from jes ltd. My impressions:

01. jes is obviously a JOHN BARRY fan, and this is an excellent introductory piece. feels like space (not that i've ever been).

02. nice transition into the lyrical pieces. i've heard good things about LOW, and this track confirms the praise. Reminds me a bit of early CHARLATANS UK.

03. is this from Surfer Rosa? i have Trompe Le Monde and Bossanova on cassette. Edgy.

04. i love the relentless beat, but i'm wondering if that accordian sound is synthesized or real.

05. from the group name, i'd imagined four clones of "Sweet Baby James" singing melancholy in four-part harmony. groovy jazz-funk is much better!

06. one of my favorite memories from college is slam dancing to PRIMUS' "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver" one night at a local club called The Underground. "Luck?" rocks.

07. quality rock song. me likey.

08. just when i think jes is making an offering unto the hard rock gods, VINCE GUARALDI slips in and drops quiet class.

09. sometimes i wish you limeys would speak English ;)

10. this track puts me in the mind of a drunk cat walking on a cat walk. mmmmmmm...dulcet tones. also reminds me of BILL FRISELL, but he's been putting out a bunch of crap recently.

11. classic bluegrass taken to new heights. sweet.

12. more DAVID HOLMES, eh? sultry.

13. i usually like JOE JACKSON songs when i hear them, but i don't own any of his albums.

14. i like the bass in this one.

15. Horton Swaps Some WHO: in which several swap participants include songs by one of the world's biggest bands. i put "The Song Is Over" on mmyers cassette; kaufman sent out "Sally Simpson;" now, jes provides the "Young Man Blues." if only BlairZip had included "Happy Jack" on his disc.

16. yarrrr, matey, me booty always enjoys a good reggae dub dub--three men in a tub, yo! ho! and a bottle of absinthe.

17. thanks, i can put this one on the next mix disc i make for my wife :)

18. Plug Tunin'! I almost put "Three Is A Magic Number" on my disc!

19. Note To Self: More MOGWAI.

20. i prefer the "answer" song by the WHORE UNCLES, "Here I Hide My Hell."

I saw Mogwai last week at Coachella and enjoyed them.

Also, I bought The Thrills' CD yesterday--I can't believe such American-sounding songs all about the Western U.S. is coming from a bunch of Irish lads.

The Thrills is gone...

I was so excited about typing "More MOGWAI" that I forgot about The Thrills. I liked "Don't Steal Our Sun," but I thought it sounded a bit like TRAVIS' "Tied To The 90s" from your previous swap.
Maybe I'm just mental.

How was Coachella, Choad? Who did you see? Did you catch any of LCD Soundsystem? They are the most fantastic live band I have ever seen.

Coachella was better last year. Not only was the line-up better, it wasn't oppressively hot (110F/43C). The second day, we didn't go until 530 to avoid the head and because the only band I wanted to see before that was The Thrills, which in hindsight I should have done. I'm suprised the Thrills and Belle & Sebastian didn't ignite in all that heat--Irish and Scots simply aren't designed for that kind of weather.

I saw (in no particular order)
Saturday:
Radiohead
Pixies
Kraftwerk (awesome)
Stereolab
Kinky
Peretz
The Sounds
Mark Farina
DJ Icon
Seb Fontaine

I tried to see Beck, but they put him in the smallest tent and with no comparably-popular act on opposite him, the entire place swarmed to see him. I'm not sure who I was watching when LCD Soundsystem was on, but I wasn't there.

Sunday:
Belle & Sebastian (Wonderful)
Air (CRAP!)
Basement Jaxx
Paul Van Dyk
The Crystal Method (insanely good)
Adam Freeland
Mogwai

At last...a review of "At Last...Fuzzyman's Fourth Mix" by umfumdisi:

Nineteen versions of the same track? Let the sonic experiment begin!

19. RAY ANTHONY - Yes, I had to cheat and hear the original version first, but only for the sake of comparison. First impression--fairly standard (but quiet) big band 40s-style presentation. The trumpet solo stands out.

01. ETTA JAMES - Well, of course, I've heard this version. Etta just sounds like the blues. Excellent.

02. HARRY WARREN - Silky instrumental. Much more polished than the original if perhaps lacking in impact.

03. THE TEMPREES - It's time for androgyny! Okay, the lead voice is definitely male, but the others are questionable. You know, I always thought Leo Sayer was a woman until I saw him. Oh, and the 79s "porn" guitar give this one a creepy edge--waka-wow, waka-wow.

04. GENE HARRIS & SCOTT HAMILTON - I can't describe this any differently than fuzzy did on his liner notes. One thing I did have trouble hearing was the sound of Hamilton's skates.

05. LOU RAWLS & DIANE REEVES - I'm not a big fan of vocal Jazz, but Rawls is cool, and he and Reeves make a great duet team. Good choice for your wedding reception.

06. HOUSTON PERSON - Big tenor sax and elegant guitar.

07. CHRISTINA AGUILERA - Haw-haw! At times, I thought Bobcat Goldthwait had taken over the microphone. This track is an excellent example of someone who can sing yet has not a clue how to sing this song.

08. MILES - A passable version. Miles usually gives ballads a better treatment than this, so I'm wondering when and where it was recorded--maybe during his early heroin years or later lost-his-chops years.

09. EVA CASSIDY - Excellent again. Clean and natural.

10. BLUESIANA HOT SAUCE - Sultry.

11. CELINE - Much better than Aguilera--even if the string arrangement is a bit over-the-top.

12. GLENN MILLER - Pretty bland for Glenn Miller.

13. JULIA DEMATO - You heard a "hint" of passion?

14. DIANNE SCHUUR & B.B. KING - B.B. sounds great on vocals and guitar.

15. TEMPTATIONS - The vocals are good, or maybe I was distracted by the PHAT beat.

16. JOAN OSBOURNE - Pretty good. Has just a hint of country flavor with that steel guitar. However, I wish this version had been done by Ozzy Osbourne!

17. ELLA FITZGERALD & JOE PASS - Understated, yet fetching. Ella doesn't oversing, and Joe gives the music a beautiful treatment.

18. STEVIE NICKS - Now that you've mentioned Stevie sounds like a "goat in heat," I can't hear anything else!

19. RAY ANTHONY - The last. After hearing all the other versions, this one comes off a bit better. the trumpet is still smokin', and the chorus lends an otherwordly quality.

--------------------

Once again, fuzzy hits the mark with an outstanding concept and excellent delivery. I thought I might be bored to tears by a disc full of different takes on one song, but the stylistic variety and well-planned sequencing provides an excellent look into how different artists can breathe life into an "old chestnut." Excellent. Thanks, man of fuzz.
