it's kinda ugly.....but that's my opinion, and opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one and most the time they stink.....

Another ride from my past....

a '96 Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel
It had an inline six with a turbo, it was fun as hell to get sideways in. It was a long-wheelbase which sucked ass, but it got me to school and back. The transmission was geared for hauling, so it was pretty slow(topped out at 85 mph). It got about 25 m/g which is pretty good but it was a stick. It did one hell of a burnout(my dad didn't like it when he saw the tires). Towards the end of it's life, it would leak about a gallon of oil every two days. Which sucked cause the only brand of 10W-40 Wal-Mart carried in a gallon was Rotella T(great stuff by the way) which costs $8 for a gallon, plus that was when diesel was at $3.25/gal, so it got too expensive to drive. It's the only vehicle I've ever had that had a muffler on it. It was an awesome truck....oh yeah the modification was hauling mirrors that stick out like 20 feet off of each side, you know the ones I'm talking about....that was a badass truck...lol

My Dad once had an older chevy truck. Where the original (?) light green color didn't show through, it was (spray) painted flat black with a white stripe running up the hood and atop the cab. We called it The Skunk, of course.

First car: '81 Ford Fairmont Futura (AT). Transmission pieces were literally falling out on the way to trade it in for a...
'92 Saturn SL-1 (5-spd). When the alternator went out for the second time (see leftover 80s GM crap above), I traded it in for my beloved...
'94 Honda Accord LX Sedan (AT). I wanted it mostly because it had a CD player. It was made in Japan, and I'd probably still be driving it if I hadn't been T-boned at an intersection. It was never really the same car after that. :( Traded it in for my wife's current vehicle when we needed something bigger/safer for the baby, and I inherited the...
'96 Accord EX Coupe (AT) mentioned above.

I thought the company was called Smart... Isn't that model called a Two-Two or something? Those things are really nifty though.

Yes, I noticed a complete Smart car deficit when I was over in the US in June. I personally love it, it's incredibly easy to drive and manoeuvre due to its size, and you can park it pretty much anywhere. I use it for both commuting and long distance drives, and considering its fuel economy, it just can't be beaten.

Ok, so it's probably not a chick magnet, but that's not what I bought it for. And hey, some of my female friends think it looks "cute".

It's made by the MCC (Mercedes-Chrysler Corporation). The car's design and manufacture was a joint venture between Mercedes and Chrysler, although in the UK it's pretty much owned by Mercedes... as I know, to my cost, when I have to get the thing serviced at a Mercedes garage. And my particular model is a Smart Fortwo (as opposed to the Smart Forfour, which looks like a Vauxhall Corsa, or the Smart Roadster, which is a sports car).

I think they started building these before Mercedes bought Chrysler to form Daimler-Chrysler. I recall that it was a joint venture between Mercedes and Swatch.

Okay I'm finally getting into this conversation. As some SCers already know, I have a car named "The Taxi". It's a 94 Sundance. Once, it was driven by a man who refused to pay his child support, so my car is recognized quite often for its appearance (which I will describe in a moment) and subsequently pulled over often.

It's green. Several shades of green. It was originally painted when it was "born" a shade of hunter green. The sun and rust have both taken their toll on him, and he has some faded spots on his hood, the roof, and the trunk. Some of this was also obviously done by road salt. On the roof, the non child support paying man had an idea: I want my car to be a uniform color again. So he tested some spray paint. It was not anywhere near a shade of hunter green. The test spot is still there. Then my car, before my ownership, ended up in a river which is how I came into ownership of it.

My father handles everything under the hood so it's in running condition, nothing fancy. My son and husband handle everything inside the cab, so there's a baby seat, a lot of trash, and some half eaten stale crackers. And a cigarette burn hole.

Yes sir, it is one fine piece of machinery. I bet you're all 3 shades of green with envy.

To be fair, the interior (as far as the driver and front passenger are concerned) is very roomy and you wouldn't notice any difference in driving it compared to an 'ordinary' car. The size is purely to do with the fact that it has no nose and no butt. Width and height are just the same as any other car.

However, I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, and I'm not out to convert anyone. I just like my car.

It's gotta get insane gas mileage i'm sure... And on that note, how does it fare in any type of crash?

The top speed is roughly 90mph, which I admit is not massive, but it suffices. As for petrol (gas), it averages at around 70 miles/gallon. On a long, consistent-speed journey, it can even rise to as much as 100 miles/gallon. That matters a whole lot more in the UK, where our petrol costs about US$8.25/gallon.

It's built around a spherical "roll cage" which means if it has a serious crash, the driver is kept safe. In safety tests it performs much better than most smaller cars like the Corsa, Clio or Punto. The plastic bodywork will be a complete write-off, admittedly, but it's easy to buy a new set and just bolt it back on.

I think they're gonna have to do major tweaking with the safety standards to get it here. I mean, in the UK MOST cars are smaller than they are here in the US. I mean, imagine an accident involving a Hummer H1, a Nissan Armada, Ford Excursion, Chevy Suburban, and Smart Car. I would love to drive one but I wouldn't feel very safe on today's roads driving a smart car with huge trucks and SUV's. Smart Cars are cool as hell though, don't get me wrong.

I've seen a few Smart Cars kicking around here. Apparently, at the one dealership they sell them at, they're selling like hotcakes. Can't keep any of them as show models.

You know, I had much the same thoughts when I was in California. As my friend drove me down one of your "freeways" I was thinking that a Smart car would look even smaller there than they do over here. Trouble is, if they "bulk up" the Smart for US standards, it won't achieve the same fuel economy anymore...

Hey, maybe you can downsize all your other vehicles first? ;-)

Does the Smart car have any sort of storage area at all?

What about a spare tire?

Yeah, it has a boot (trunk) which is understandably small, but you can get your shopping in (or even a medium sized harp, so I've been told). The front passenger seat also folds down if you want more space and aren't intending to give anyone else a lift.

No, no spare tyre I'm afraid. I believe there's some sort of injectable fluid you can buy which you shove into your dead tyre, and that expands it sufficiently to get you home, but it doesn't come as standard.

"Tyre" is the best and most olde enlishy word I've seen on this website and I've seen this website and am drunk.

I have a blue 1990 buick lesabre limited with 4 doors and a smashed-ass drivers front quarter panel from hitting a pole in the rain. They popped it out and got the light working. "They" meaning people that fix cars.

It has some crazy digital temperature control which seems odd for its age and looks funny next to "wood" paneling accents.
