Ivy's post pretty much covered what I would have said, although I would like to discuss one point:

Betty Boop cartoons were essentially silent cartoons which used the visuals to explain the minimalistic plot, (cartoon shorts generally just got mudded up if the plots were too complex, you only had 7 and a half minutes) or they used music all the way through. Any dialogue was there just to push the plot along, all the entertainment value came from the drawings and animation. Cartoons like the Transformers generally don't have this kind of entertainment value. Try watching an episode all the way through with no sound. Not only will you probably not be entertained, you will have no idea what is going on.

The music episodes are what really make cartoons of that era stand out from the 80s cartoons. When you have jazz musicians like Cab Calloway doing the music for your cartoon, you don't need voice actors.

I really need to cut this post short though as I need to get to work. Here's one that pretty much displays the points I was making, and again displays how 80s cartoon don't know what the hell they're doing:

Yes, this argument is entirely pointless.  If you've got a problem with that, I'd suggest you avoid the Internet.

You can have action/scifi shows and movies which are devoid of any intellectual merits and yet still fun to watch.  Mirror Mask is a good example, and any given Harry Potter movie.  But Transformers is bad.  The animation is bad, the plots are pointless and often make no sense, etc.  The dialog is worse than bad; no amount of skillful voice acting can help if those scripts are what the actors are voicing.

It's possible to define pretty much every cartoon and movie as "crap," since we don't need it to survive. So I agree with you on that point.

I'm pickier about what I consider "crap," though. Otheriwse you end up overusing the term and it loses meaning (like the words "hero" and "truth").

I hear Giuliani asked for an endorsement from Fire Convoy ("Robots in Disguise" Prime), but was told to "slag off" because of the crap Rudi gave firemen before and after 9/11.

I'm sure there's a comic series to be had in mixing TF with modern politics...

Goddamnit, long division is hard okay? This is why calculators were invented, so I don't have to do it. You know how much long division I've done since grade school? None. Sure, a little fuel efficiency calculations now and then, but...fuck long division!

It would be one thing if people were here representing Transformers as some kind of high cartoon art. But all I've ever heard in defense of it is Robots Go Boom, Me Likey. It's rather pointless to look down on somebody for that, especially when those people arent disparaging Tom and Jerry OR Cab Calloway and Betty Boop by doing so.
