Maybe it's just my minimal interest in Star Trek to begin with, but I really didn't like 2 much.

Mediocrity at its most average.

ST II (Wrath of Khan) was, in my arrogant opinion, the only decent one of the bunch, despite obligatory scenery chewing by every principal cast member and an extremely corny ending. It was the only one that fully qualified as science fiction, and the only one where plot and character were interwoven with any kind of grace.

To me, one measure of an adventure flick's quality is the scenes where the hero and villain are introduced. Have a look at these scenes in II, and then in the others. In II, the way these scenes are written and shot leaves no doubt as to these characters' roles. It's good storytelling. Corny, yes-- but you can say that about all the ST movies.

Spock's self-sacrifice gives the story a tragic depth lacking in the other STs, where (as in most adventure flicks), after a few minor characters are offed, the heroes beat the bad guys and wind up patting each other on the back as if they'd just won a soccer game. No such scene on board the Enterprise at the end of II, and it would have been lots better if we didn't all know Spock would be revivified shortly.

It also would have been better without that contrived dialogue where Kirk says he feels young. Yeah, we're so stupid, we need to be hit over the head with the death and resurrection theme. Oh, well. It's still pretty decent writing for a sci-fi movie, or any big Hollywood SFX extravaganza.

As you can see, I haven't given this much thought.

What others say about boorite!

To be honest, I don't really like any of them. Maybe 6, because it is all so fantastically camp.

My humble yet arrogant opinions:

ST1:

This, while artsy and geeky, was less than par for the others becuase it still had the overbearing hand of Gene Rodenberry's sweaty palm all over it. In an attempt to use up a big budget and create cool effects, all the actors reverted to an ice-age mentality.

ST2:

Agree with boorite, the pure adventure of it drove it and Ricardo Montalban was great. Spock provided a great story in his death, continued in the next two movies.

ST3:

While it didn't have the flair of the last movie, it still provided a good adventure and was weighed down by Kirk's undying love for Spock.

ST4:

Cheezy, too popular themed, I still liked it. It had the swashbuckling feeling of ST2.

ST5:

Kirk acts even more self-assured and cocky than any other movie, all the characters scream WE'RE OLD! and the sudeo-philosphy is too murky. Was that guy God or not!!?? Then what was he?!

ST6:

A favorite of mine, Nicholas Meyer once again did good to cast away the usual problems with Star Trek. Kirk is kept under wraps, there's good complex plot, and it doesn't feel like the old Trek.

And for those of you who scoff at Star Trek, it scoffs back. Ha!

They're all pretty boring. VI had a few good bits.

In my current drunken state, I agree with sober Kramer. Six is clearly the best, although 8 is quite good, apart from the whole "Borg Queen teaches Data emotions" subplot.

In many ways, Star Trek is foiled by the act of being Star Trek, and trying to be all arsy and intellectual when they could probably use the setting to produce a good action film set in space. But no! They must use the Star Trek setting to have a whole poncy moral.

Did you know the Borg represent communists?
