You know you're a Trekkie when you differentiate between Trekkies and "Trekkers":

Trekkers wonder what it's like to have sex in zero gravity.
Trekkies wonder what it's like to have sex.

I disagree.

Trekkers wear their uniforms to work and insist on being called "Commander".

Trekkies enjoy the show to the point where they buy merchandise and set their VCRs to tape it and occasionally attend conventions.

I am a Trekkie. I have kissed Trekkies. I have fervently boinked Trekkies. I would not touch a Trekker, even with someone else's hands.

Typical denial. You have a Starfleet uniform in your closet, don't you?

Sometimes, when you go to sleep at night you pretend like you're Data and you're turning off your power unit.

At the McDonalds drive-thru you say: Big Mac and fries. Make it So.

You call your girlfriend Number One.

Right before sex you yell ENGAGE!

Come on, don't lie. I can't be the only one.

I cant say i detest star trek , as it gets run and re-run so often , and i can appreciate a few of the storylines.

That said , TNG was about as far as i went with the Franchies.

DSN , Voyager , this new bloody one , and that last god awful movie , i have not witnessed , nor do i wish to.

As Deep Space Nine rips off the whole Babylon 5 thing so blatantly , and Bab 5 (for the first 2 series anyway) Absoloutely Rocked.

Kinda went to shit after that. Oh well.

I agree that season two of B5 was the best, but the whole series was very good. The low point was probably late season three and early season five. S5 picked up after that obnoxious pratt Byron finally fucked off, and the second half of the season is really excellent. S4 is probably the most consistently good season, without a single bad episode, and very many good ones. However, it never reaches the power of the best eps in S2 and S3. When G'Kar made his speech to the council after the Centauri invasion of the Narn Homeworld... wow, shivers and goosebumps...

Oh, and the Trek fan saying I heard:

Trekkies love Star Trek, except Voyager.
Trekkers love Star Trek, especially Voyager.

After one season, that show forever became "Star Trek: Valium" in my mind. *snore*

I've always wanted to get into B5. I've heard it has good storylines. I found about the series a couple of years after it had started, so never really tried.

Maybe I will though, cuz some of the shit they play on the Sci-Fi Channel is downright oogly. I mean Farscape's okay at best, LexX seems like they're rationing plot for when the revolution comes, and Earth: Final Conflict makes me want to throw my hand through the TV screen, rip out a vacuum tube and scold it.

B5 and DS9 were both quite good, and paralleled each other often. Both got a huge boost when they started to stop doing individual episodes and concentrated on one gigantic plot with lots of sub-plots. For B5 it was the Shadows, for DS9 it was the Dominion. I was particularly impressed when in B5, G'kar turned from being a pernicious bastard, to being enlightened, it really let the actor stretch his abilities in truly wonderful ways.

Another aspect of B5 was those amazing Video Toasters on Amigas, created some excellent CG for its time. And the Shadow vessels, very creepy.

It is likely that if you see just one episode of B5, you will think it is just another cheesy space opera. A few of the "actors" are really bad, so some scenes end up looking no different than Farscape or Battlestar Galactica. It isn't until you see a few episodes in sequence that the richness of the plot and characters becomes evident. As the series goes on, it also becomes apparent that Peter Jurasik (Londo) and Andreas Katsulas (G'kar) are great actors.

I do recommend, however, that if possible you fast-forward through the parts later in the series that include that drama queen Byron. Yeesh.

Lochley sucked too. I also wasn't a big fan of Franklin's acting either. The whole show was brilliant though. Season two, three and four were probably the most amazing bits of TV I've ever seen. Season one was good, but is understandably kind of slow in the over-plot department. The last few episodes in season 5 were excellent though. Byron kind of ate. I have a cold and I'm going back to bed.

It's times like this that I'm really glad I no longer have TV to tempt me. If a show is interesting enough for me to watch it a few times, then chances are I'll get into it enough that I'll feel like I'm really losing out if I miss a week. Then I start rearranging my schedule to fit TV into it, then it's ruling my life.

I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying I have issues in dealing with it and I'd rather not have the temptation.

I always thought that Richard Biggs (Dr. Franklin) sounded like he was on the set of General Hospital. The worst actor on that show, though, had to be Patricia Tallman (Lyta Alexander). I used to burst into laughter every time she furrowed her brow and narrowed her eyes when she was supposedly doing psi stuff.

In comment to that link with the anti-TV-evangelist, it is not wether you watch tv or not, it's what you watch. I personally watch about 5 differing shows, a couple are brainless fun fiction, the rest are shows like Nova, Discovery Channel, TLC. Course there is the old standby of watching lions fuck on Animal Planet. That whole neck biting thing is rather intriguing. ;-)

No problem - B5 only shows in reruns now. I founded a little Sunday afternoon SF club, originally for B5 but now into Doctor Who and all kinds of things. Over the last five years or so, we have watched the entirety of B5's five seasons three or so times.

Gabe, if you have a friend with a VCR, I strongly recommend you get into the habit of renting a B5 tape or two every week and setting aside a couple of hours to watch the series through.

I did that a couple of years back. Lasted around a year without having a TV. The reason I did it was because I found myself watching like 10 hours of tv a day, so I thought there had to be a better way to spend my life.

What my one-year experiment taught me is that you've got to be in the right frame of mind to try something like that. By the end of the year I hadn't gone out and discovered any new countries or come up with a mathematical formula that governs cheese flow; I did a lot more reading and a lot more playing on the computer. Though I consider it mostly a flop, I do think that the fifty or so books I read that year made it at least somewhat worthwhile.

The first half is a tad dodgy - JMS literally had half a season of storyline that he was trying to stretch out to a season, and a really annoying character shows up for a month or so - but around the halfway mark it turns around and becomes seriously excellent. That's not to say the first half is all bad. It has some very good moments, but it is the weakest half-season of B5 by far.

The serpent society is a homage to one of my favorite super villain teams of all time. Heres a little run down of there history:

THE SERPENT SOCIETY - One of the best wild ideas to come from the ever-fruitful imagination of the late Mark Gruenwald must surely be the Serpent Society. It was founded when the teleporting villain Sidewinder noted that the Avengers benefited from strength in numbers and a solid infrastructure for their operations. He reasoned that villains could benefit from the same, and created an Avengers-style team of snake-inspired villains, such as Viper, Constrictor, Anaconda and Cobra. Though it was far from the first team of villains to be formed, it was probably the first to move beyond the Masters of Evil model and actually try to instill a sense of loyalty and camaraderie into its members. Its attempts, and failure, formed the core of a prolonged saga in the pages of CAPTAIN AMERICA.
