I think the little old ladies at the polls are screwing with us. I went up to vote, the woman says, "Which ballot can I issue you?" I say "I'll take an issues only." She repeats "issues only" to herself several times and says "Oh! Non-partisan." My parents go up to the polls. To avoid confusion, I tell them to get a non-partisan ballot. The woman says to them "Oh! You mean issues only!" Weird old ladies.

Dean appears to have lain down and died. He's gone ahead to Washington state and is talking big there, but I think Kerry's campaign is snowballing. His wins are attracting more and more voters on the basis of the wins alone, because an awful lot of Dems want nothing more than to beat Bush.

The Washpost says it ain't over yet. I think it's all over but the screeching.

[Click to view comic: 'After the primaries']

BTW, anyone else notice that the 3 candidates in the top half are WASP-ish, and the 3 in the bottom half, trailing irredeemably, are more on the "ethnic" side? Oops, make that 2-- Lieberman just quit.

Ever notice a plurality of Americans are WASPish?

Back to what that other conversation, I think 9-11 stole the idea of Homeland Security, not Bush. Other than that I'm not sure your big beef with law. Keep fighting the good fight though.

I have, indeed. So that means America votes for Presidents that fit a certain ethnic profile? The "like us" ethnicity? Aren't we supposed to be past that?

I've also noticed the non-WASP candidates trailing way out of all proportion to this plurality you mentioned. So I don't think "like us" is the whole explanation. For example, I think Sharpton only got 20% of the black vote in South Carolina-- his strongest showing yet. I don't think it's WASPs voting WASP vs Jews voting Jew, etc. I think it's down to a "don't throw your vote away" mentality. Everyone knows that "ethnic" candidates will probably not get that crucial WASP vote, and so they're viewed as not-viable candidates. Or maybe it's just that the WASP male fits some idealized pattern of what we think a President is. Sort of like "news anchor."

I was going to posit some relationship to socioeconomic advantage... WASPs are probably better represented in the corridors of power than most ethnic groups. But the same can be said of Jews, and we all knew there wasn't gonna be no Jewish President this year.

Anyway, it's an interesting aspect of electability, like the height factor.

Sometimes I wonder if the Democratic party just pushed candidates who represent minority groups to run, so that they could continue to "represent" multiculturalism, knowing damn well they would not win. It sure looked good for them to have such a diverse looking group debating in the beginning. "Ok now let's dump the eye-candy and nominate ourselves a good rich white man."

That might explain why Lieberman was so "ho-hum" all the time. Maybe. Say where have all my barbituates gone?..

I think makk's right about that, even if it does sounds a bit like a CONSPIRACY THEORY.

I've changed my mind about Kerry. He might not be so bad after all. Seeing him hug a man who's life he'd saved moved me as much as any cynical electoral ploy can. It'd be hard to be worse than the incumbent, and impossible to be worse than Clinton. Looks like he's got a good chance at being pres, too, unless W lucks out and al-Qaeda nuke New York or something.

Hardly. It sounds more like they're doing anything they can do to win. This mentality is why I'm afraid of a democrat getting into office. They get elected on the promise of a free country with no war or poverty, but when they get in, they'll just continue the war that's already started. Has everyone forgotten that we had war while Clinton was in office? The whole Monica Lewinsky thing was a perfect distraction for all the actual wrongs Clinton committed. Not saying it's a conspiracy, just good timing. Bush needs to, hell, I dunno, commit some incest or something. That would get people to forget about the war completely. "See!! He's a terrible man, he has sex with his brother from Florida!" Then a few years later, everyone would herald him as the greatest president ever, and you'd hear peolpe saying "oh come on, it was just a gay incestual relationship with his brother. The man just wanted some hot dick!" Then his wife will run for Mayor of some big city, then threaten to run for president.

Aaaanyway, Al Sharpton didn't want to be president for real. He knew he wouldn't get elected, but he also knew that he shouldn't underestimate the drunken redneck population of this world. As Dave Chappele said (paraphrasing), the first black president better have a mexican VP. He'd have gotten some mexican guy to run with him, so if he won, anyone who killed him would be responsible for "opening the border" as it is. Ask the southerners which would be worse: President Abraham Johnson, or El Presidente Jaime Guiterez? I think they'd go for Abe Johnson as prez, personally.

That's the problem with the Democratic Party. Your main issue is not liking the current president. Wow, I'm really impressed when I shop my vote around, that's pretty deep. That's how Russian dictators used to gain popularity, by blaming all the woes of the nation on the last leader. Now THAT'S responsibility.

So you're saying it's ok for a political party to ground its platform on the dislike of one individual, and I am dull for thinking otherwise? Or that it's ok for Democrats to not get out and vote as long as they don't completely despise the Republican in office?

I like how in one post a member of the Anti-Bush Party criticizes Bush for taking the Democrat's homeland security idea, and then another one posts an article criticizing the administration's effort to secure the homeland post-9/11.

So you just put the arguments aside and say it's because people don't like Georgie Porgie. That's got nothing to do with it.

We don't like what he's done. We don't like the evil scum he's brought into positions of power. We don't like the way he's made a mockery of everything this country stands for. We don't like the way he's cavalierly led our troops into clockwork butchery or our economy into fiscal ruin. Go ahead and say we don't like him. You know that's not it, even if we'll be happy to see his sorry ass tossed out on the street in 11 months, and his corrupt cronies brought to justice.

But no, it's personal? Right.

I think MikeyG needs electroshock.

The presidential campaign of 2000 wasn't based on "finding someone better than Clinton" though. I'm talking about normal voting Democrats also, not party mouthpieces slamming the other party. This nominaion process has been issueless from the beginning, and has pointedly been about simply winning, first by trashing front-runner Dean and now by apparently making the party platform "Anti-Bush". Once again, I am totally impressed.

Issueless? I think you could be confusing the campaigns with press coverage of the campaigns. The issues I've heard the candidates address are too numerous to mention here.

Press coverage has, however, tended to be rather on the issueless side, as always.

How one-dimensional. I love your point of view, MaKK. It allows you to skirt the avenues of free thought so effortlessly.

Try going to some of the candidates' websites that you are slamming and read all the non-issues that they're addressing.

Dennis Kucinich has and will continue to run on issues, as Al Sharpton will. Unfortunately, they have a snowball's chance in hell.

Isn't that what Bush did before 9/11 gave him someone else to blame them on?

Anyway, in foreign policy terms, Clinton was worse than W. He bombed northern Iraq continually from 1998 for no reason at all. When pilots couldn't find anything vaguely military, they'd just drop their payload onto farms. At least the Bush admin put a stop to this (eventually. They kept up the tradition for a while).
