We watched the extended edition DVD of Fellowship the other night, and I have to say that it is even better than the original. The additional and lengthened scenes really flesh out the story and characters, and don't slow it down one bit. This is obviously the film that Peter Jackson intended.

I'm sure you're all dying to hear my $0.02 on The Two Towers. I'm not all that bothered about faithfulness to the source text for its own sake, but I felt that the films pedestrianized a lot of Tolkien's clever turns of phrase.

In the first film, I was waiting for the bit where Saruman says: "The Ruling Ring? If we could command that, then the power would pass to us", to which Gandalf replies "only one hand at a time can wield the One, and you know that well, so do not trouble to say 'we'!"

Instead, there was a brief exchange of "Meesa bad", and "You no good" and they started bouncing off the walls. The dialogue in T2T was an improvement, but it was still more basically expository than the book. I know they had to make it so the Harry Potter fans could follow it, but still...I hope RotK will return further to Tolkien-talk.

Never .... just like 2002.

I personally am stupidly happy with the Lord of the Rings movies the way they are and I hope the third one just doesn't screw anything up from the first two. I was kind of blaming myself somehow about the new Star Wars movies stinking ("They're not bad movies, I'm just not a good viewer anymore!"), but Lord of the Rings has made all that pain and self-doubt go away and also I'm a lame fan of elves now.

I got a brother-in-law who got rich young. His basement has a home theater with 9 leather loungers on a stepped floor plus sound that vibrates. Just outside the sound-proofed doors is a wet bar with full grill.

Earl Gray: I've taken to a version of this tea. But I can't help hearing John Luke Pickard ordering it in his ready room "Earl Gray, hot." However, mine is organic... and decaf... and I use the tea bag twice. Now, I know Warf had a paladin-like sense of honor and duty, but if I was captain of the Enterprise and he heard me order "Earl Gray, decaf, organic, weak" he would just have to kick my ass clear into Romulin space, if only for my own good.
