First we had Osama all giggly because of the pictures showing Iraqis tortured at the hands of Americans, let alone that the Red Cross suggests that as many as 80% of the Iraqis in that prison were "arrested by mistake." Now we have Bush leaping for joy because of the taped beheading of a single American.

They're both as giddy as school girls that they can point at these things as reason to continue the violence. They both suck.

Spank, the greatest thing about the new beheading news is that the family of the beheaded kid knows the U.S. is full of shit.

U.S. officials alternately claim that they offered a flight out of Iraq to Nick Berg, the victim, and that they had no knowledge of his being detained by Iraqi police for 2 weeks. U.S. officials also denied that FBI questioned Nicholas Berg during this holding period.

The family says there is no way the Iraqi police held this kid officially for two weeks without approval by coalition forces. They said, "Iraqi Police don't tell the U.S. Forces what to do, U.S. Forces tell the Iraqi Police what to do."

My question is, if he wasn't detained, how did they offer him a flight out of Iraq? U.S. Forces or officials just came up to him one day while he was working on a reconstruction project and were like, "Hey, want to leave?"

He's prefer we know there were abusive American prison guards, but not that our enemies saw off heads of prisoners based on religious preference.

I don't quite get (MikeyG) the culture of springing up or alluding to conspiracy theories whenever something beneficial happens for our cause to go to war. What does it matter the details of when, where, how this non-military American interacted with security forces in a chaotic Iraq. Frankly, what WAS he doing there? Also he was a right wing pro-war hawk, and his dad was a left-winf antiwar activist. Yeah, my guess is his parents would spin this to be anti-war.

If you're saying that people who are happy the prison abuse photos surfaced have thrown their lots in with Osama, I agree.

I doubt hawks started dancing in the streets when the Berg movie was released. I think we were already of the opinion that the enemy was just that savage. I think that's where we differ, in that you're of the opinion being proved correct is a "joy", where there is nothing joyful about realizing how grave the need for decisive military and police action is.

For example if the powers to fight terrorists in the Patriot Act were restriced and I argued against the restriction, and there was another tragic attack because of it, I wouldn't think "Oh joy! I was proven that my agenda was correct!" I care about the issue because I don't want the tragedy at all, not because I want to be proven right.

I can't believe the Boston Globe isn't suffering a bigger embarrasement. They were similarly duped, except by screenshots from a pornogrpahy which were purported to be American soldiers raping Iraqi women.

There hasn't been near as much publicity as the Boston media backing away from this giant mistake as the coverage of what happened with the Mirror.
