Personally I don't mind verbose comics, although that is probably because most of mine also have too many words. I think that if you are going to use a lot of words, then fit in a lot of jokes. Puns, in-jokes, asides et hoc genus omne. Think of it like a cake. A souflee may be big, but in reality it is just air. A chocolate cupcake however...well, that's got substance, a giant chocolate cake even more so.
