As you may have well noticed, P2P networks like KaZaa, e-Donkey and even gnutella have been flooded with "spoofed" .mp3s. Files that have had the greater portion of the song removed, and then had that portion replaced with a huge, fuckoff sample of clipped, random noise. The other method is just to loop the first verse endlessly.

I tossed up a page about it on my crap website, and it also goes into the now-infamous "spoofed" Madonna .mp3s from her "American Life" CD that were nothing more than Madonna getting all nasty on her fans.

Can you get the .wav file there?

Boom, baby! Oh, yeah!

Is the RIAA behind this shit?

Does the Pope wear a funny hat?

Discuss.

I bought the album on the strength of that track. I'm disappointed.

Hey, the RIAA folks get bored waiting for thier cartel to collapse from its inability to adapt to changing circumstances. Watching thier goon squad of lawers extort teenagers out of thier college funds keeps them entertained for a while, but it only goes so far.

I recently got some Weezer for a friend (Not for me, this time. Not into Weezer much anymore after hearing the band on an endless loop during my high school days. It also reminds me of an ex girlfriend. Which is bad.) and over half the tracks I downloaded were like, five seconds of the song, then random noise.

GR!

once i downloaded a file labeled Weezer - Maladroit(whole album ALBW).mp3 and it wasn't the whole album - it was the whole album and other unrealeased songs in a random order. I had to listen to each and cut the selections one by one. Pain in the rear.

I download SONGS that I like. If enough of a band's songs are kick-ass, I'll buy the goddamn CD. The record industry doesn't seem to understand that by eliminating file-sharing, all they are doing is making it harder for people to bootleg shit. Then, instead of people like me downloading a couple of songs and then buying the album, I am going to scour my network of friends to find someone with the album and fucking burn me a CD. Or just download the songs onto my computer. Bootleggery will always be here, and the RIAA is a bunch of fucking idiots for not (for ONCE) jumping on the bandwagon. They had to embrace 8-tracks, records, tapes, and finally CDs, but they could not embrace this. Their loss, they suck, fuck them, who cares, go die, eat shit in hell, etc.

When I download, I download whole albums to get a real sample of the artist. A song is meaningless - almost every artist has put out a song that was better or sounded different from everything else they did. I get the album, listen, if i like i get another, then if i like very much i procede to download the artists entire discography. People who download one song should listen to the radio.

*Raises Hand*

You think I ever buy an album if I can't get a good honest sample of what's on it? And don't even pretend that the radio can give you a good honest sample of jack.

You don't need to download music from local bands who you can see play live, but anything else? Buying music blind is just nuts, and downloading MP3s has always been the easiest way to get a meaningful feel of what a band's music is all about.

Mmmm, I think that he's right when it comes to whether or not you are talking about the worth of an album, which is what is on the sales rack here, not individual songs. There's nothing meaningless about individual songs, but when you don't have a lot of money, it can be very hard to justify paying 12 - 22 dollars just for one song, when the rest of the package makes you nauseous.

That's my whole point. Blowing 11.99 for one hit and a CD of p0o is ridiculous. However, that p0o might be somebody else's caviar. So, while not "meaningless" artistically, meaningless as far a ref for the purchase of a whole CD? It's unwise. It's ok to just want the hit single, is my point. You shouldn't have to invest yourself into a band's whole ovuere because they made one hit.

When the record manufacturing biz decides to start selling singles again and using the web as a primary distro point, they can stop beating people with their buggy whips to hork up two days worth of grocery money for 11 tracks of Madonna's "artisic vision" and one hit song. In the obvious business model that would emerge, P2P could then become one of their main revenue streams.

Don't hold your hand on yer ass waiting, tho.

I think they still sell singles...I might be wrong, though.

I also don't think that they should charge you for these things (They do do that, you know). I think they should just make a limit to the number of songs you can have. Then if you want more, you have to pay a little money. It probably takes too long to get just one song if you have to pay and all. So, that way if you wanted the whole cd you could 1 Go out and buy it, or 2 buy it maybe for a slightly higher price on the net'.

Then again, major stores that rely on selling cds pretty much (like Media Play) might go out of buisness. Then it's chaos...

i think i was misunderstood all around...

I was saying if you're going to understand a band or its dynamics you cant judge them based soley on one song, be it good or bad. A song is meanigful be it awsome, yes. However, a legend does not it make ( I'm Too Sexy - Right Said Fred[thxs gabe])

No, you were not misunderstood. I'm saying that I don't much give a dead rat's foofoo about a band's "whole dynamic" because if they are gonna rise up past the horseshit to the point where they have a release on a major label with lots of money being thrown at it, that whole dynamic will become self-evident. If you can't tell pre-fab from artistry, yeah... I guess you have to slog through the whole mess sometimes to find out.
The band's "whole dynamic" generally tends to hit me in the face like a wet fish pretty much as soon as their product is released and getting played.

Often, though, I am very pleasantly surprised. If a band really grabs my ear and their label is selling them as blah blah blah... and I know that aint what they're about, that's always nice. My immediate instinct is to call them and say "Get out of your contract. NOW"
