I came accross this odd fact while randomly searching an encyclopedia site. How exactly does cesium "attack" glass? Does it simply break the molocules apart? Does it melt it? Does it turn it into tasty candy? Anyone know?

Also, I didn't know Cesium was liquid at room temperature. All I really knew about it was that it is used in atomic clocks and explodes when it comes into contact with cold water.

I'd like to see the latter properties of Cesium.. from a safe distance, of course.

Also, I personally believe that life could exist on other planets in a silicon-based form possibly, provided it's planet has lots of mercury, cesium, or some other liquified metal. Hell, it could even exist as an iron-based life form if it's from a planet close to a sun (close enough for the iron to be liquid).

Just a theory. :D

I remember watching a video in high school chemistry where they dropped a tiny piece of francium into a glass trough, causing the whole thing to explode quite spectacularly.

There must be potential for some kind of caesium or francium based weapon for naval targets.

Francium?! Whoa. That must have been a miniscule amount....

But, yeah. I think somewhere like the size of a soda can full of cesium would destroy just about any large ship!

It's because Glass always rolls a 1 on it's fortitude save vs Cesium.

No, Glass has dexterity of 1, and has equipped a weapon in the off hand that brings it down even lower. The best it can roll is a 1.

Hey I have seen that video. Did your chemistry class have a periodic table where there would be a vial of each element (obviously not every element) super-glued to it? I tried for ages to pull the vial with phosphur in it off the wall, IIRC thats the stuff that erupts in flame on contact with oxygen or air. I succeeded in breaking the vial but nothing happened as it was filled with oil or something.

True Fact: While most kids play rock-paper-scissors, chem geeks play Cesium-Glass-Sulfuric Acid.

Seriously, you may have noticed that Cesium and Francium both show up in that left hand column of the periodic table, home of the drunken frat boy metals that are willing to get it on with anything that carries a spare electron. That column is topped by the more common lithium and sodium that are nasty shit in their pure mettalic forms, and willing to react quite exothermically on contact with most anything.

Yeah, that much I did know. The "reactive metals". My teacher actualy shoed us what happens when you drop a little lithium and sodium into water. It was cool.

I think that's how they made Keanu Reeves' eyes look like they did in Revolutions.

This is all kid's stuff. What you really wanna see is francium + fluorine.

I once saw a video of it, done in the Australian outback. A piece of francium the size of a grain of rice blew up a whole shed.

This is also why the French have such bad teeth.
