Here's a question that, as near as I can tell, hasn't been asked or answered so far.

What if a person wanted to delete his own account, but wanted to do so quietly and without fanfare, simply by choosing an "option" inside the "modify profile" area.

Hypothetically, that member will have recognized that his comics completely suck and yet are on display to the end of time through the medium of that evil empire Google.

I realize that the goal here is to have MORE members rather than less. Also realize that by DONATING, one could delete bad toons and theoretically start over. But wouldn't simply "chucking it" and starting over also be a viable (and reasonable) "button" to have somewhere?

Not really. It is more a technical question than anything else, and certainly is not a complaint. I have simply noticed in my travels that a great many member driven sites allow a member to delete his account and wondered what everyone thought.

I have read in the forums where some plagerism has taken place, and thought that, for example, a repentant plagerist might want to delete and re-sign up in order to become a non-plagerist newbie.

Perhaps a hated member could slip quietly away, having deleted hated material en-masse' and return as a beloved noob, magically having acquired talent from somewhere.

Don't know much about Brad's software (except that I love it and him) and asked this ice breaking question to shamelessly get attention from Spankling (as well as saiisfying my curiosity - about the question, not Spankling).

1. I don't think there's any goal of having more members rather than less.

2. If you donate, pretty much any amount at all, you'll get donor status and can delete your comics yourself. If for some reason you don't have a credit card and don't know anyone who does, or who is willing to donate on your behalf, you can probably work out some alternate form of payment with Brad.

3. Brad's a pretty nice guy. If you contacted him privately and quietly and asked him nicely to delete your comics and account, he might do it. I don't know how indulgent I'd feel towards someone who wanted me to do perform some special request he could basically accomplish by donating a few bucks, but anyway, there's nothing to lose by asking politely.

4. I am entirely in favor of people who make crappy comics removing themselves and their comics from the site, so theoretically I'm in favor of a function that allowed users to delete themselves, but again, they can do basically the same thing by donating a couple of bucks, so. One also has to consider that, as it stands, "deleted" comics aren't immediately removed from the database, partially so that if someone's account is compromised, their entire stripping career isn't wiped out. Would a user deletion system have the same safeguards? I don't know.

Well, the donation route is the most highly acceptable route because it helps Brad - and I have already sent the address request for purposes of a check. So that solves my own problem - sorta, in that it will allow me to not only edit my own work, but choose, comment on and rate (highly) other work that deserves such treatment.

But as a technical advance in the overall feature set of SC, there remains the question, would a "suicide button," maybe with a "do you really want to die?" tag attached be an appropriate addition, worthy of the effort programming it would require?

Since I am not asking from a position of peerdom, I am both pleased and surprised pleasantly at the respect in the response.

I shall continue to monitor the thread :)

I think everone's account should be subject to the possibility of random auto-deletion. That would make the system fair for everybody.

Following that logic, shouldn't every person in the United states be subjected to a random period of incarceration during which he would be forced to watch reality TV as a method of making sure that all unpunished crimes would be properly retributted?

That way, fairness would be applied according to chaos theory, allowing quantum physics to rule the penal system, decreasing even further the chances of parole for either Mark Chapman or Martha Stewart.

I do get the occasional request from users to delete their accounts. Sometimes I get around to doing it and sometimes I don't, depending on how busy I am and how legit the request seems.

There are obvious benefits to offering that ability: the database is getting huge and it'd be nice to give people the option of clearing it out. But if there was such an option it'd signficantly up the amount of damage that could be done if someone got into your account.

I've only heard about it a few times. And that's the thing: there's no real reason to bother. If the prize for hacking someone's account became that you got to delete it, I imagine it would be more fun to do.
