Why are the keys on a keyboard set up the way they are. Whats the theory behind it and who had the final say so in the layout that has been used since it was first established. Im gona see if I can reconfigure mine. I'm sick of it. I want OPTIONS!

You could always pop off the keys and put them the way you want. Granted, it wouldn't make sense, but it would be fun.

Especially if you do it to your annoying roommate who is always borrowing your pants and returning them all funky and unwashed.

Do you mean changing your symbol preferences from US to European? You can do that in the Microshite settings somewhere.

Or do you mean changing from a QWERTY layout to an ABCDEF layout? I look forward to seeing your efforts.

Useless fact: your keyboard top line reads "qwerty" etc, because this configuration of keys was designed to slow down manual typists who regularly jammed keys.

That's right. To contine the uselessness: the original keyboard which jammed all the keys was called the Dvorak keyboard, also because of the position of the upper left letter keys. You can still set up your computer to recognize Dvorak input if you want to relearn how to type and totally confound anyone who tries to use your computer. In theory, a Dvorak master can type faster than a Qwerty master.

They do sell dvorak keyboards, which have the keys set up in a manner so as to speed up typing. Learning to type using the dvorak method is very difficult for those used to the qwerty method. My ex could touch-type using dvorak and eventually increased his typing speed by like 50% or something.

Whenever he left the toilet seat up, I'd get him back by changing his keyboard settings back to qwerty.

Buying a Dvorak keyboard is like buying an asparagus strainer. Sure, it'll work, but you already have something that will do the exact same thing so you really just wasted your money.

The only difference between a dvorak keyboard and your regular keyboard is the location of the keys. So just change your OS settings to look for dvorak input and move your keys around. They come up, you know.
