I live in Toronto Canada where we have 'umpteen' newspapers that are available on either daily or weekly basis. (I work for one of them) and it's generally the same info: News, entertainment, local happenings etc.

Some cost money but others are free to everybody: Example is "Metro", which is a worldwide paper that is free and generally located for those that commute to work.

I was thinking that a "Weekly Comic Only!" publication would be fun, popular and entertaining for people who don't want to just read the news. Fuck the news! Who doesn't like to read comics? The potential target audience would be huge because old and new alike enjoy them.

It would be a medium for comics to send their work for potential publication. I would not pay anybody for their work, but it would be exposure for them. (They could have a website address with their signature etc)

The funds required to print and distribute the publication would be generated through advertising revenue. Unfortunately, nobody really likes to read ads, but it would be necessary to offset costs.

So, my questions are: Has this been done before or does it currently exist anywhere? Do you think it's a good/bad idea? Would you submit your comics to this type of medium in order to potentially see it published? If no, why not?

Any other input/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

If you kept up at it and let it consume your entire life. Then thuis idea should just be getting popular about 10 years after your death.

Comic mags are sorta on the way out. I don't know about you, but I've noticed a steady decline in the popularity of Mad Magazine and other comics.

I read "Funny Times", which is a monthly, left-wing comics newspaper and is quite good. I can't really think of any others, but I had this idea a long time ago and think it is just swell. Syndicated newspaper comics are for the most part shitty.
Make it happen and I'll contribute.

The day MAD dies is the day I commit suicide. That magazine is my life.

A buddy of mine said that Cracked magazine is coming back, speaking of Mad.

I think that's a great idea, cre8tive. That may be because I like comics, though. I say give it a shot. Like crabby said, it can only drain your soul away.

Cracked was on a hiatus for the past year I thought... I have a few issues of it from a few years ago. It's just such a blatant ripoff of MAD.

Thanks for the input/comments!

I've done a little bit of market research on the idea outside of this site a while back and the response was very 'middle of the road'. Personally, I still think there would be a market for it and that it has validity for it to fly, but I'll have to do a lot more research into this before i even think about letting it 'consume my life'.

Cheers.

I'm not sure there would be a market for it as a commercial magazine, maybe it would work better as a kind of fanzine thing.
