I live in Toronto Canada where we have 'umpteen' newspapers that are available on either daily or weekly basis. (I work for one of them) and it's generally the same info: News, entertainment, local happenings etc.
Some cost money but others are free to everybody: Example is "Metro", which is a worldwide paper that is free and generally located for those that commute to work.
I was thinking that a "Weekly Comic Only!" publication would be fun, popular and entertaining for people who don't want to just read the news. Fuck the news! Who doesn't like to read comics? The potential target audience would be huge because old and new alike enjoy them.
It would be a medium for comics to send their work for potential publication. I would not pay anybody for their work, but it would be exposure for them. (They could have a website address with their signature etc)
The funds required to print and distribute the publication would be generated through advertising revenue. Unfortunately, nobody really likes to read ads, but it would be necessary to offset costs.
So, my questions are: Has this been done before or does it currently exist anywhere? Do you think it's a good/bad idea? Would you submit your comics to this type of medium in order to potentially see it published? If no, why not?
Any other input/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
