My hotmail account just got an email from "DragnXero ". It is close to DX's ID, but not it. I see a "_" in front of the user ID that I don't see on his site.

The email wants me to download a.com file. I haven't touched it.

Did anyone else get this?

Do not open it. I got an email from someone I know with an underscore in front of it, and emailed him to ask what he sent me. He said it was a virus that mailed everyone in his address book. Luckily, I read my mail in pine, so I don't ever get virii.

DX just sent me a message on ICQ.

He has a virus which sent a lot of shit out through his address book to everyone. If you get emails from him , he asks to delete them instantly.

Dunno what hes got , but he says its nasty , so ill take him at his word on that.

Well, I'd switch to mutt, but I don't feel like retreating from my comfortable settings to a program I don't know, even if it is supposed to be superior.

Besides, I think mutt uses vi, and I like pico better. :)

Try changing the value of your EDITOR environment variable to "pico" and see if mutt uses that instead. I think this worked for me once. But I still use pine anyhow. I just like it.

I got an e-mail from him and Outlook blocked it because of the attachment. I've seen it from other folks, too. Definitely a virus.

Yeah, I figured you could.

I actually only wanted to change programs because I couldn't get newsgroups with a password working in pine. Then I searched hard enough and found the string that allows it... but the newsgroup server I was going to use is not happy with pine, or with my account, or something.

Then I got a job that won't allow me the time for usenet at work anyway, so it's moot. I'm still in pine, and happy that way. I can't remember what I used in the beginning. Then I used Eudora for a handful of years, and have been using pine for at least the last 5 or 6.

At work I use Outlook. Hardly anyone has my work address though, so if my computer gets a virus, it will probably be from an internal sender. That will suck anyway, because it will cause the network administrator to crack down on non-work use of company email, and people who only use it moderately (like myself) will suffer because there are people at work who are email sluts.

I have a blank email I sent myself that I keep in the inbox so the program won't automatically open the next email it receives... so if I see any suspicious subject lines, I can delete them without having read them.

I use Outlook (non-Express, professional edition) which is supposed to be susceptible to these things, but it always does a nice job of shooting the naughty attachments in the head. It simply refuses to allow any kind of script to run itself when an email is opened, and tells me if anything tries to do so. The downside is that it refuses to let me open executables that people have sent to me, even if I know they are virus free. I am going to wrangle with a settings a bit and see if I can fix that.

I got my bachelor's degree at a university known as the "Harvard of the Sky" in the aerospace community. Two weeks after I had started there, I already knew better. Our email was in pine and our programming was in Fortran.

I think the previous sentence will be all I'll say the next time the alumni association tries to hit me up for a donation,

I used Pine until a few months ago and now use OE. No problems yet, although I've received numerous viral attachments. I just don't open them.

But on a similar, security-related note: I've been running websites on several platforms for years. My Linux and Irix systems got hacked. IIS under NT/2000 got hacked instantly. The champ, believe it or not-- always probed but never hacked-- is the DOS version of Xitami running under any flavor of Windows. I think it's hard to compromise because you really can't do much with it.

Kind of like Pine.
