It's optional. Surely it stands to reason that the masculine version of "maw" would be "daw".

But it's not pronounced the same, therefore, it's not spelled the same.

That's like saying well, I say "Mum" so, I'll just assume that the other one is called "Dum".

It's a shortened version of "Dad", you've put the apostrophe in "wi'".

Maw is it's own word, but Da' is just Dad, but pronounced wrong.
